Douglas’ 1960 production of Spartacus was based on the 1951 Howard Fast novel which Fast wrote as an allegory of his own refusal to testify to Congress about his political involvement. Fast wrote for the Communist newspaper The Daily Worker in the 50s. Spartacus was Marx’s favorite historical figure.
