The Empire Strikes Back: Jeff Sessions out as Budget Committee Chair
Red State ^ | December 18th, 2014 | streiff

Posted on 12/19/2014 6:52:10 AM PST by xzins

Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions is out as chair of the Senate Budget Committee.

**"Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) is giving up his bid to become the next Budget Committee chairman — deferring to Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and eliminating the only competitive chairmanship battle in the incoming GOP Senate majority.

"Sessions has been the panel’s top Republican for the past four years but Enzi technically retains seniority over the Alabaman on the committee and said several weeks ago that he would challenge Sessions for the chairmanship."**

This is going to portrayed as a simple matter of seniority. It isn’t. That story has the same veracity and, indeed, the same source as the story that Senator Ted Cruz’s opposition to Obama’s immigration power grab led to the approval of stalled Obama nominees: Mitch McConnell.

Sessions has been serving as the top Republican on the committee for the past four years and was in line to take the chairmanship after the GOP won control of the Senate this month.

**"But since then, Sessions has undercut party leaders with his strident opposition to President Obama’s immigration action, even raising the specter of another fiscal showdown that resembles previous confrontations with the White House. Party leaders are eager to fight back against the president, but in a more measured way in line with their desire to show that they are up to the task of governing.

That has provided an opening for Enzi, whose name-out-of-a-hat seniority gives him the standing to challenge Sessions and who is pitching himself as a less-confrontational alternative.

Conservative activists say GOP leaders are backing Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) for the chairmanship because he would be a more reliable party man.

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and other members of his team have publicly stayed out of the contest, but conservative activists nevertheless say they are quietly backing Enzi because he would be a more reliable party man.

Gaston Mooney — who served as an aide to former senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who often clashed with McConnell’s leadership team — wrote in an article last week in Conservative Review: “If Sessions loses the chair of the budget committee, it is only under the orders and direction of McConnell.”"**

While Mike Enzi has a solid voting record he is a reliable tool of the Senate leadership. The hard hitting analysis that Jeff Sessions brought to the Budget Committee will now become the watered-down pap Mitch McConnell wants.

The establishment has a lock on power, so it’s time to find a way around them.

We won so lets raise the white flag before we have to actually do something positive.

Frankly, in the spirit of “cooperation”, a euphanism for surrender, why not just relect Reid.

It would be the compassionate thing to do, given that he's about to lose his current job.

Turkeyneck is a traitor. How’s that GOP led Senate looking now after Turtle Man took the reigns? Tried to warn his supporters but they wouldn’t listen. Now we’re going to have to pay the price. Must be lots of stuffed envelopes being handed out lately...that 1.1 Trillion probbly included payoff money to be kicked back to the senators for their vote for amnesty. As they’re replaced and booted out of office one by one by Garcias, Sanchezs, and Rodriguezs I’m going to laugh my a$$ off as they fall into financial ruin as their wives and male partners leave them...

Seniority to select leadership doesn’t ensure the best of leaders but it does pretty much ensures corrupt leadership.

"Dumb move, GOP."

Another reason to depose the feckless McConnell as Senate Majority Leader early next year.

Nothing’s going to change. No matter who’s in charge, government will continue to grow. When the GOP last controlled both the WH and Congress, government and deficits grew to eye-popping levels. The whole system will have to collapse before any semblance of sanity is restored.

They cut themselves their own checks. Nice, eh?

Do they know any other way than dumb? The evil party and stupid party have combined at this point into the uniparty where the evil party sets the agenda and executes it with the stupid party in the corner going: what? huh? we disagree oh wait we agree, whatever you think is best masters...

We are so screwed.

To be “fair” he didn’t seems to put up much of a public fuss to keep the spot.

how a minority of RINOs continue to hold sway over an overwhelming majority of conservatives makes no sense to me. There is something wrong with this picture. Somebody has to explain it. Money? Threats? What is it that keeps them in power against the will of this nation.

You have a handful of men betraying hundreds of millions of citizens, yet, somehow, we do nothing about it. This has to change, and they have to go.

I have no idea as to why Sessions is suddenly lying down on this. He should be hopping mad and raising hell, but instead is meekly congratulating his "good friend" Enzi for usurping him.

What's up with THAT?

Of course they did. You’ll just have to search for the correct line item that doesn’t make any sense...
