London’s airspace has been closed due to a computer failure, the European air control agency Eurocontrol said Friday.

Officials at London Heathrow Airport said there was a power outage at the NATS control center in Swanwick, England. Heathrow’s statement gave no indication how long the situation was expected to continue. …

Is this an attack? I ask because didn’t the same thing happen to the Chicago air traffic control center? Forgive me if I don’t believe in coincidences like this.

IIRC, that Chicago incident was due to a fire set by an employee.

Chicago was my first thought, too. Surely, these airports have back up systems. There is no reason to close down.

But two such outages at facilities that serve the same purpose and just months apart?

I’m with ya on this. I would HOPE that most systems have redundancy as a safety feature. Perhaps the “failure of the computer” is an excuse for some test run or they have some info on an incoming plane(s)?

Two outages for different reasons, perhaps. The power system in Britain may be a bit decrepit (like ours) and that may have been the cause.

I do not want to rule out an attack, but I also don’t want to jump to such a conclusion without more info.

Could be, but I like to blame the International Maori Conspiracy for such things. Those Maoris are so sneaky and underhanded!

I read a few days ago England was forecast to be getting the ‘storm of the century’. Maybe weather related, albeit they got that same century beating, last year too.

Nope, that storm was shown to be the work of the Maori conspiracy. I read it in Weekly World News.

Maybe Torchwood is up to something for security reasons.

Its out due to computer problems caused by the terrible UK weather. Areas in the UK have had over 5000 lightning strikes this week. Add to that 80-100mph winds, driving rain, sleet, hailstoes, and 50ft+ waves.

The bad UK weather has been well covered on FR.

I don’t think I’d want to land with that wind. I saw a vid of the waves. With this bunch in office here and around the World, I wouldn’t put anything past them.

Thanks for the reminder about the weather there. I saw this map, http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-42.90,35.92,296 , (real-time wind map) a couple days ago. The wind NW of Great Britain was ready to take aim.
