It’s pretty clear that Jews despised non-Jews. See the accounts in the Gospels of how they viewed Samaritans. Or even of how the “real” Jews of Judea viewed those from Galilee.
There is lots and lots of evidence of this, in the ancient world and since.
I don’t claim a proper understanding of the Bible would have led them to think thus, only that they developed intense pride in being God’s Chosen People.
