Navy Seals got within 100 yards of Yemen compound - before a dog bark alerted al-Qaeda captors

A British-born U.S. photojournalist and a South African aid worker held hostage in Yemen by al Qaeda militants have been 'murdered' in a failed rescue attempt.

American citizen Luke Somers had been held hostage since September 2013 in Yemen's capital Sana'a having moved to the country two years earlier.

The 33-year-old was reportedly shot by his captors as Navy SEAL Team six, made up of around 40 men, carried out a dramatic rescue bid in the Wadi Abdan region of the southern Shabwa province late on Friday night. It is the second attempted extraction by special forces in as many months.

Another hostage, South African aid worker Pierre Korkie, was also killed during the operation - a day before he was due to be released.

They were only 100 yards away from the compound when the terrorists reportedly heard a dog bark - prompting the militants to shoot the pair dead.

They must be the only SWAT team that won’t shoot a dog.

What this exposes is the lack of available HUMINT: They should have known there were dogs and been prepared to mitigate the threat. Using dogs for patrols/tripwire is a new tactic, ya know. (big SARC)

Relying solely on sensor-based intel results in this sort of failure. That ‘dog bark’ could very well have resulted in SEALS being taken hostage.

Back when, there was a suppressed pistol that was referred to as a "hush puppy." An S&W 9mm double stack with a threaded barrel and a slide lock to block the action noise. It was particularly intended as a method of silencing barking dogs.

I'm starting to wonder if SEAL teams are beginning to believe their own press. It wouldn't be the first time. ISIS might be stupid, but they learn.

My real question is what is going to happen when the animal in the WH starts authorizing SEAL hits in CONUS, against what he considers to be "enemies."

As pets.

It’s a dogs life in the Middle East but they will bark for whoever throws them scraps.

Should have sent some LEOs as a vanguard to take the dogs out first.

The “barking dog” was a leak from the WH. Got to protect their own, ya know.

“They must be the only SWAT team that won’t shoot a dog.”

That will leave a mark.

At a distance of 100 yards the team probably didn’t know the dog was there.

The beautiful dog depicted is a Saluki and is a dog companion to the desert dwelling bedouin.

Contrary to Freeper dogma, dogs are part of the desert culture. They are still prized today for their beauty and grace.

Wiki

Historically, Salukis were used by nomadic tribes for hunting. Typical quarry included gazelles, hares, foxes and jackals.[2] In one Bedouin method of hunting hares, the hunter rides close to the quarry on a camel while holding the Saluki, which he throws towards the prey while at speed, giving the dog a running start.[6] Another method, primarily used in hunting gazelles, involved the use of a hawk to gouge out the eyes of the prey, so that a Saluki can then bring down the blinded animal.[7] .

The Quran forbids Muslims from keeping dogs as pets. It specifically grants permission to keep dogs as guards and working animals.

Seals in ‘Nam had “Hush Puppies” - modified S & w Model 39
with silencers firing subsonic ammunition to shoot any
dogs (or Geese!) which might give them away......

SOOO, with the hostage dead, any reason not bo bomb the compound into busted concrete, and a few sticks, and pasty fleshy substance? Serious question.
