Sessions could wield Budget gavel as a populist cudgel (but go-along Enzi wants it!)

Conservative Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama could be chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, injecting a much needed shot of populism into the GOP policymaking apparatus.

Sessions would join other conservative chairmen with populist leanings, including the two men whose committees oversee Wall Street. But Sen. Mike Enzi — a Wyoming conservative who is closer to the party Establishment and the business lobby — could take the gavel instead.

Here’s the background on the race for Budget chairman:

Technically, the entire Senate Republican Conference — all 53 or 54 GOP senators — choose the committee chairman. But as a matter of history, the conference confirms the selection of the committee members. So the campaign for the gavel is a campaign to win the majority of the dozen or so Republicans who are placed on the Senate Budget Committee. We likely won’t know the committee membership until January.

Historically, Republicans select the most senior senator vying for a gavel — the only exception being Jesse Helms winning the Foreign Relations chairmanship over Richard Lugar during the Cold War.

Enzi and Sessions were both elected in 1996. Enzi holds seniority over Sessions because, as they were sworn in, they drew straws — and Enzi won. Sessions has been the ranking minority member of the committee for four years, despite being third in seniority, because Chuck Grassley preferred to be ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, and Enzi focused on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

Sessions was widely considered the next Budget chairman, but Enzi in late November announced he would seek the gavel.

Enzi's claim to seniority? A piece of paper he pulled out of a hat back in '97!

Why doesn’t Enzi CONTINUE to focus on the Health, Ed., Labor & Pensions Committee?

Perhaps some of the PUPPET MASTERS from K Street are pulling some strings. Time for McConnell and Enzi to sell out America and the American people again to the mob of RENT SEEKERS?

If McConnell thinks they have a tiger by the tail with Cruz, screw over Sessions for Chairman and watch the fireworks.

Note just yesterday he called out The RINOS and Little Boner for their capitulation on Amnesty as a failure to live up to campaign promises.

“Why doesn’t Enzi CONTINUE to focus on the Health, Ed., Labor & Pensions Committee?”

Because he’s going to let his buddy Lamar chair that committee, so that a liberal still controls it, and Enzi will take Budget, so a conservative DOESN’T control that!

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION is the reason!!!!!!!!
Jeff Sessions is the best Senate hard liner on immigration so Mitch (rat basturd) McConnell does not want him running Senate Budget Committee because he might try to defund the Obama-Amnesty//////

Mitch McConnell has pushed Enzi into trying to grab this chairmanship.

Enzi hasn’t done anything in 10 years but collect checks from the taxpayers. He wants this position now just to feed his ego. Enzi is what’s wrong with the republican party.

It is time for affirmative action - on Boehner and McConnell. The only reason these two were re-elected was to keep the Republican majority. It’s now time to kick them to the back of the bus. They should be removed from leadership positions.

All they have to do is use a “line item defund” tactic. You don’t need to defund the whole government, you defund OBAMA and his policies. The House can do that (and they could have all along).

Care to go back and read all the Cheney hate threads when she was trying to tell us this guy was an old GOPe moderate, and would do just this sort of thing.

I encouraged people living in John's district to vote for the democrat, the loss of one seat would have been well worth it.
