Massachusetts Town Mulls Nation's First Total Tobacco Ban
PBS News Hour ^ | November 16, 2014 | William Brangham

Posted on 11/16/2014 2:48:56 PM PST by JSDude1

TRANSCRIPT:

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: The town of Westminster, Massachusetts — population 7,300 — is a small, quiet community about an hour west of Boston.

When the local health board holds meetings, it usually happens here in this room, where you can get advice about things like septic tanks and mosquito control. But not on this day. This meeting Wednesday night had to be moved to the local elementary school because the town is up in arms.

MAN: You people make me sick!

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Why so mad? That Board of Health is proposing to make Westminster the first town in the entire country to completely ban the sale of tobacco.

That proposal went over like a lead balloon. That doesn’t mean they still won’t push for it, behind the scenes. They just won’t hold any more public forums, or else they may get more of the Tea Party (mad as hell!) Treatment with the cameras rolling.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”
― C.S. Lewis, God in the Dock: Essays on Theology (Making of Modern Theology)

If Ben Franklin were alive today he’d say “ma’am, you can keep it”.

Of course they bring up “the children”! Yes, the children. the children the children, always the children because liberals in all their arrogance have declared that you are not good enough to raise your own kids thus they will do it for you.

I see it stars Dick Van Dyke or “Penis Von Lesbian” as Mary Tyler Moore says she calls him.

The people have a fundamental right to proscribe items. They do it all the time. Free people match into voting booths, and freely vote to regulate something.

Penicillin comes to mind. Dry counties are very common in some states. Society says incest is wrong. Porn needs to be regulated and behind the counter at the 7/11. Examples abound.

Some cites in Nevada, make prostitution legal. That is their right.

Why is it smokers believe they shouldn’t be regulated?

remember your response to this thread when government comes after your chocolate, or your fried foods, or your sugary drink, or those extra 20 pounds you put on last winter.

Interfering with a businessman’s right to sell a legal product is very disturbing and a very slippery slope.

What is it you believe society can or can not regulate?

If you watched this story-these people proposing this law/regulation aren’t even local legislators/managers they’re basically bureaucrats.
