Peshmerga fighters head for Turkey en route to Kobani

Iraqi peshmerga fighters left Iraq for the besieged Syrian town of Kobani on Tuesday to help fellow Kurds in their battle against Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants, a senior Kurdish official has said.

Hemin Hawrami, an official in the Kurdistan Democratic Party (PDK), wrote on his Twitter feed that the peshmerga fighters were flying from Arbil to Turkey, from where they will travel by land to Kobani.

Peshmerga forces will arrive in Kobani in the early hours of Wednesday, the Iraqi Kurdish Rudaw website reported on Tuesday, citing informed sources. Part of the 150-strong peshmerga artillery force was flying from Arbil to Turkey. Others will travel by road, accompanying trucks, guns and other heavy weapons, the Rudaw report said.

The peshmerga deployment to Kobani was reportedly scheduled to take place earlier, a delay that Turkey blamed on the Syrian Kurdish group that is defending Kobani, the Democratic Union Party (PYD). "There is a problem of trust between the PYD and the peshmerga," Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said in televised remarks on Tuesday. "Therefore, the delay in the process [of the peshmerga passage to Kobani] stems from such reasons," he said.

Obama to Erdogan: “This Kobani massacre thing is bad for me politically. Let the Kurds reinforce Kobani.”

Erdogan to Obama: “OK, let’s get all the rats in one trap.”

Would the Turks then turn on Kobani, on some pretext, with Obama’s tacit approval? Ridiculous on its face, but who knows anymore?

Thanks. No trust issues. But they like to drive a wedge between them.
