Ibuprofen Is All It Takes to Avoid Airport Ebola Screening: Experts
NBC ^ | 10/3/2014

People who contract Ebola in West Africa can get through airport screenings and onto a plane with a lie and a lot of ibuprofen, according to healthcare experts who believe more must be done to identify infected travelers. At the very least, they said, travelers arriving from Ebola-stricken countries should be screened for fever, which is currently done on departure from Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. But such safeguards are not foolproof.

"The fever-screening instruments run low and aren't that accurate," said infection control specialist Sean Kaufman, president of Behavioral-Based Improvement Solutions, a biosafety company based in Atlanta. "And people can take ibuprofen to reduce their fever enough to pass screening, and why wouldn't they? If it will get them on a plane so they can come to the United States and get effective treatment after they're exposed to Ebola, wouldn't you do that to save your life?" On Thursday, Liberia said the first Ebola patient to be diagnosed in the United States had lied on a questionnaire at Monrovia's airport about his exposure to an Ebola patient. Thomas Eric Duncan's arrival and hospitalization in Dallas have underscored how much U.S. authorities are relying on their counterparts in West African countries to screen passengers and contain the worst Ebola outbreak on record.

Virologist Heinz Feldmann of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has studied Ebola for years and helped develop an experimental Ebola vaccine. He told Science magazine in September that airport screeners in Monrovia, where he spent three weeks, "Don't really know how to use the devices." He said he saw screeners record temperatures of 32 degrees C (90 F), which is so low it "is impossible for a living person." Feldmann said in an email that according to his colleagues who have returned from Liberia in the last few days procedures for taking temperatures and doing clinical checks have improved.

Wouldn’t it just be easier to block all passengers originating from Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone? Isolate the vector.

I kind of think that guy with Ebola in Dallas came here on purpose to infect Americans.

Not for terror reasons, but because many over in Africa want that drug given those two patients we brought back earlier.

I think that some Africans thought we weren’t supplying that drug to them on purpose. So they felt that if Americans get Ebola, that drug will go into quick production.

just musing

That cousin who supposedly called the CDC asked why the relative in Dallas wasn’t being given that ZMapp stuff.

“The fever-screening instruments run low and aren’t that accurate,”

Someone called Rush yesterday and said he was holding the “instrument” on himself and was registering a body temp of 91 degrees.

Easier perhaps, but that would be racist. King Obola won't stand for it.

More likely Ebola is a death sentence where he was and he thought he probably had it after handling someone who died from it. Coming here dramatically increased his chances of survival - damn everybody else along the way.

Essentially the wealthy liberals who abuse us with PC propaganda will start feeling nervous about this and soon you will hear about how we need to quarantine Africa, but by then too late. My WAG in the next few days Liberians and others will start rushing anything American in an effort to get a visa, this is going to get much worse.

"Ibuprofen Is All It Takes to Avoid Airport Ebola Screening: Experts"

What ignoramuses reside in editor's chairs these days! Or is it the "Experts"?

Ibuprofen does nothing to help one "Avoid Airport Ebola Screening" (unless it has now developed a previously undiscovered "Cloaking" effect). However, it will help a mildly symptomatic passenger PASS THROUGH Airport Ebola Screening.

(mild grammar communication freak rant off)

I had my kid do that a decade or so ago when he was coming back from a hot zone and got sick there. We figured it wasn’t the dreaded disease of the day, since there were certain things you had to and be near to get it (and that wasn’t the case with him). I gave him specific times and dosages near the flight (and well above label numbers), and he sailed right through. So yes, it’s easy to beat the screening, and ALWAYS bring Ibuprofen with you when you travel overseas.

once the word gets out, every ebola patient with means in Africa will head for America

Here is the containment method. Recreate Ellis Island.

Every person entering the country on a west African passport will be quarantined for 30 days.

In the old days, Ellis Island was constructed for just such quarantine of the European immigrants. If it was good enough for white folks , the blacks can’t bitch

(Mrs Bert requested me to post her thought)

“I kind of think that guy with Ebola in Dallas came here on purpose to infect Americans. Not for terror reasons, but because many over in Africa want that drug given those two patients we brought back earlier.”

Given his name and likely religion, I too doubt he is a terrorist. But he is VERY SMART, maybe a bit selfish, but given a death sentence and one chance of living, I suspect that many Americans would do as he did, especially considering how successful he was. He just may survive this now.

But next are the copy cats...basically ANYONE from that part of the world that has the means and simply wants to get out of there, sick or not. Prepare for lots of “tourist visas” being issued.

These people are wealthy elite, living in mansions and enjoying grandeur and small armies protecting them. They don’t care for what they are so well protected against while the rest of us are screwed.

Current Ebola airport screening procedures are about as effective as TSA airport screenings - they give people a false sense of security and political cover for do nothing effective politicians.

There can be NO EFFECTIVE Ebola screenings until a blood based screening technique becomes widely available. Why do I say this? Isn’t that CDC’s method of confirming or denying the presence of Ebola?

If that is the absolute final proof of Ebola why can’t we move it to the front of the line?

Okay right now it is difficult and expensive. But which is cheaper? Doing that level of testing first or tracking down hundreds of potential Ebola carriers a few weeks later like we’re now doing. Plus add the medical and human costs of caring for any Ebola positives you discover during that effort.

Why am I going there? A mortality rate of 50 to 70 per cent is why! In three months, wipe out half of your family or co workers and ask me the same question again. That’s the high end risk. Are you willing to pay it?
