Sauce for the goose. Lot of the North Sea oil an independent Scotland would rely on would be claimed by the Shetland Islands if they separate from Scotland. The Shetlands were part of Norway until the 15th century. The Isle of Man along with Jersey and Guernsey are Crown Dependencies and not technically part of the United Kingdom. They issue their own currency.

Wow, interesting that could happen. So Scotland may see a key resource rich part of Scotland decide to leave a newly independent Scotland. Wonder if this would upset the applecart, so to speak, as Scotland has been expecting to control the oil fields if they become independent.

Saw this in The Shetland News this morning and had to laugh.

AFAIK Shetland is even more socialist than Scotland. The Vote would try to transform Scotland to a neo-european, socialist welfare state, much as Scandinavia. Shetland would be even more so.

But it would be financed by Shetland oil so Shetland could tell the rest of Scotland to bugger off.

Socialist bickering, so it’s popcorn time in my home.

FWIW From The Shetland News - “Great Is The Truth And It Shall Prevail”

TODAY Shetland and the rest of Scotland decides on the nation’s future. Voting began at 7am and continues until 10pm when the counting will commence.

Shetland News will bring you live updates as the evening progresses towards the final count, which is expected around 1.30am.

5.45pm - Shetland counting officer Jan Riise has said that around 50 per cent of Shetland’s electorate has already cast its vote, almost twice as many as the final turnout in the European elections in May.

Turnout at the 28 polling stations varies from 32 per cent in Unst South, 46 per cent in Lerwick and 57 per cent in Bressay, while 92 percent of postal votes have been returned.

A petition of more than 1,000 signatures raised by islanders from Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles... was rejected last month by the Scottish government

If the Yes side wins, then every part of Scotland that wants to remain part of the U.K. should be allowed to do so.

Don’t like being part of the U.K. because of some over exaggerated “oppression” you think you are suffering from? Then dont force others to be part of an independent country against their will either.

This is the problem with these independence movements. Where do you draw the line? Why is it OK for Scotland but not Shetland? Given that this is Scotland, we probably could break it up into 30 or 40 countries for each clan.

It’s interesting that the same Scottish Parliament that pushed and pushed for independence has said that the Hebridies and the Orkney and the Shetland islands don’t need a referendum on their own future.
