The U.S. government Friday defended its handling of James Foley's case after the slain journalist's mother told CNN that officials suggested the family could be charged if they tried to raise money to free him. Saying everything possible had been done to bring the journalist home, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters officials worked very closely with Foley's family and with his employer, GlobalPost CEO Philip Balboni.
"Any advice that this department or other departments give to the families about what they should do in these situations is based solely on what is best for returning their loved one home, period," Harf said during a sometimes testy exchange with reporters. "Any accusation to the contrary is flatly wrong."
"It's part of our job to help the family understand what our laws are about ... " she said. "But this department would never, and did not ever, intend to, nor do we think we ever did anything that we would consider threatening" the family over a possible ransom.

Have you forgotten why Kerry was ‘swift boated?’
threaten the Foley family with raising money for ransom.
Have no idea if this happened or not.

The Foley parents were both interviewed by Meagan Kelly last night and CLEARLY said they felt threatened by the State Department. The parents of Mr. Sotlof said the same.
Deserves repeating:
“It’s part of our job to help the family understand what our laws are about ... “
So says the most lawless “American” Regime ever.
Now that’s funny right there!
He was an admiral in the Cambodian Navy.
I would be shocked if it is not at the very bottom of that range. His problem is that he thinks he's much smarter than he actually is. That's a dangerous combination.
How does Lurch get that big melon of his so far up his a$$?
The IQ test merely quantifies your ability to absorb knowledge and learn. It has nothing to do with experience, knowledge, vision, ambition, or motivation.
I’ve never taken it but I understand some questions evaluate the takers ability to discern relationships and patterns between objects or concepts.
I Still remain skeptical that the mission ever happened.
No. He ran from it.
Yes. But it doesn’t matter if your own mind is deluding the facts.
Well said. No one really changes until they have to. That day is coming soon.
This is the same Haughty John Kerry, who designated a convicted child molester as his daughter’s godfather. Peter Yarrow, of Peter Paul and Mary fame, who back in 1970 got a 13-yr-old girl high on marijuana and seduced her into, shall we say, puff on his “magic dragon”. He pleaded guilty to taking indecent liberties with a minor, and was eventually pardoned by Jimmah Carter (no surprise here). But hey c’mon, it wasn’t RAPE rape, right? A small point, but little things mean a lot. If he used such piss-poor judgment in naming a godfather for his own flesh and blood daughter, what does this say about his competence and judgment when it comes to making potentially life-and-death decisions as Sec of State?
What the State Dept didn’t count on was the Foley family actually having the stones to go public about the govt threats. The US govt threatens and intimidates people on a daily basis.
“Harf” is the sound my cats make when hacking up a hairball. I’m not one to use petty name-calling as a rule, but her use of the word “period” at the end of a sentence tells us all we need to know. I could not accept a paycheck for passing on the party line day after day.
Klueless Kerry.
(with the permission of management of course)
I do understand the reluctance to have any American pay ransom for a Middle-Eastern POW. That is one of the few times I agree with this White House. What I don’t agree with his their utter lack of diplomacy and compassion, unless they are showing diplomacy for “Workplace Violence” or compassion for ISIS as they crucify the christians. Almost never is there much true empathy shown for those living out the consequences of these inconvienient truths. There is no compassion for the Americans being physically assaulted, murdered or made jobless by the newest invasion of bug infested, illiterate illegal aliens.
I understand your points and they are based on past policy - don’t negotiate with terrorists - I get that. What I find unacceptable is the fact THEY (WH) negotiate with terrorists and break laws left and right as it suits them. Their illegal actions affect millions of people. Yet they lecture this family about the law? Really pisses me off.
