Before ISIS took over a lot of Iraq, the mid east air space over Iraq looked like I5 during a work week.
After ISIS, most of the air traffic is now flying over Iraq, including non Arabic planes.

Yes, not enough to return but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have enough fuel to reach an alternate if needed. Past of point of no return.
“Forced” down was because of the timing issue but was quickly resolved. . .and I think it was resolved quickly because the aircraft was UAE-owned. . not American.
If it was American I am sure the plane would still be there, if not the entire passenger manifest.
It is very disturbing to me. We have a lawless bunch in DC who manipulate us like nobody’s business.
If you believe that for even just a second, the whole thing may as well have come from the Onion.
I’m not a friend of the criminals in charge of Iran, and I will be glad when all of them are with their 72 virgin camels in hell not heaven.
However, Iran is a sworn enemy of ISIS and probably a few more very radical ISIS like groups.

Then, throw in the missing/seized airplanes now controlled by ISIS like groups, and Iran is probably scared they could be a target of terrorist flown airplanes:

Iran is going to be very cautious about any plane not following an up to date flight plan.
We don’t know who owns this charter plane and it’s country of origin. It probably will not be a US plane as our insurance companies are not covering planes flying over Iraq and Iran.
There is a governing elite in this country that plays by a different set of rules than the rest of us. We are dangerously close to being an oligarchy.
That was about that time I was born (1979), so I stand by my “I remember” statement ;)
That is however a perfect example. Iran knew the peanut farmer would merely huff and puff, so they took their chance to show how strong they’d grown. It took Reagan to put them back in their place.

I tend to agree with your assessment. Iranian regime doesn’t want a confrontation with the US now; this isn’t 1979, especially given IS is actually in Iran’s backyard. They’re definitely very concerned about IS. Al-Baghdadi in fact threatened the iranian regime as far back as 2007 & meant it too.
