You’re not gonna cry are you?
They still sell alcohol, candy, potato chips and other junk foods high in fat and salt.
From what I observed, it just attracted a lot more traffic to the store. People would come in, buy their cheap smokes and leave.
After all these years, I particularly remember one black guy, who dressed head to toe in white, including a suit jacket, tie and Panama hat. He'd come in like clockwork every pay day, peel a $100 from the outside of his bankroll (if you looked close, everything else in the roll was $1s, $5s and $10s), buy two packs of cheap cigars and walk out with his change. He was a pleasant, polite man, late 40s or early 50s, but he dressed the same whether it was 90 degrees, hot and dry or 40 degrees and raining outside.
Private enterprise is entitled to make this sort of a bet. They hope to get enough mileage off the “we’re healthy” theme to more than cover the reduced profit that would normally be expected from whatever product replaced tobacco on the shelves. Given the reduced tobacco sales and the low-price competition from big box stores plus greater convenience of the local gas station, that may be a good bet. I’m no more or less likely to go to CVS because of this, but I imagine some people will like the image their marketing team will manufacture.
I’m more inclined to believe CVS is doing this solely because they hate smokers. BTW, I don’t smoke.
So... I’m curious as to what percentage of their revenue stream was selling tobacco...
Can’t be good for stock prices.
Okay.
They’ve made a business decision. That is their right.
I do wonder if it is going to have the effect they seem to think it is going to have.
I haven’t smoked in decades, finally put out the fire, but I think the whole thing is ridiculous and pandering to elitists. I don’t shop at Cvs anyway because I don’t care for the way the stores are set up and their prices suck.
I used to go to the pharmacy in the 1970’s, starting when I was 14 and bought my smokes at the counter. 25 cents a pack. If you wanted just a couple they had a fish bowl they filled with different kinds that you could get three-for-a-nickel. Although I was addicted early, and that is bad - the whole Nanny State approach to everything really got going with the cigarette, and has produced a sickening juggernaut of politicians, lawyers, taxes and stupidity that cannot be thrown off without a total revolution.
At Walgreen’s I see lots of people buying ciggies. Walgreen’s will just get more business
They’ve been off the list since they announced their policy. Do ya think they’ll distribute MJ when it’s “prescribed”? If they remove/d all tobacco products, I guess maybe it’s just their way preventing strong arm robberies by 6’4” 195 lb choir boys.
Good for CVS, they’ve go the right to make business decisions and they’ve made one. Let the market (not the gov’t) decide whether it’s a good one or not.
And somewhere nearby, a reservation smoke shop manager smiles.
Don’t most people buy their smokes at 7-11?
If I bought my premium cigars there, I might be upset.....
I must be missing something! If CVS & Merlo are so “health conscious” & want a more “medical type atmosphere,” then why do they continue to sell alcohol? I have been in my local CVS in the past, and saw so many large displays of alcohol I thought I was in my local liquor store! Of course they will continue to sell the dangerous Chantix, {a drug to stop smoking} even though it has given many of it’s victims suicidal thoughts!
What this is, is more political than anything else! Whereas the uber liberal left, also known as fascists} have had a “war on cigarettes,” for several years now! Remember Mr. Hitler also hated cigarettes like CVS does!
If they want to make a difference in every ones health they should sell drugs for the same price as Costco. ]
CVS drugs highest, Costco lowest.
People still buy pre-packaged cigarettes? How silly. Been rolling my own (no tubes either) for 20 years.
Don’t know if this is just a suspension or ZOT. Gone for now another 1999 dated FReeper.
