Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) fighters have executed dozens of members of the Syrian army they captured after seizing an air base in the northeast of the country, a group monitoring the violence said on Thursday.
ISIL, a radical offshoot of al-Qaeda, stormed Tabqa air base on Sunday after days of clashes with the army and said it had captured and killed soldiers and officers in one of the fiercest confrontations yet between the two sides.
The capture of Tabqa, the Syrian army's last foothold in that area, and apparent killing of large numbers of its soldiers shows ISIL's grip on the north of the country. The group has also seized territory in eastern Syria and large areas of neighboring Iraq in recent months.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the conflict using sources on the ground, said the soldiers who were executed had been trying to escape from the airport when they were captured by militant fighters of the ISIL.
A video posted online by ISIL supporters on Thursday appeared to show members of the group making scores of Syrian army captives walk and run through the desert in their underwear.

The SS committed an atrocity like this in WWII against American troops, the Malmedy Massacre. We hunted down and prosecuted those war criminals. Those who did this should be hunted down and exterminated like the subhuman vermin they are.
It's funny how jihadists say American troops are soft, and yet almost no American has been captured alive by either the Taliban or al Qaeda.
Surrendering to these animals only means you will die a brutal and cowardly death. This Marine will be found on top of a mountain of spent brass if it ever comes down to this for me.
One of the ideas behind treating prisoners in a civilized fashion is that it motivates people to surrender to you if they are in an un-winnable position. Exactly what motivates people to surrender to these head choppers?
The Germans set them loose after 10 years in prison. Joe McCarthy had a hand in their release. Meanwhile, Japanese officers guilty of the same thing were hanged, almost to a man.
