News that jihadists from the Islamic State (IS) had declared the creation of a "caliphate" last month initially sent Lebanon's social media networks into a frenzy of puns and jokes depicting them as backward, bloodthirsty bearded men.
But soon, worry replaced laughter. After months of relative calm, Lebanon was hit again by a series of attacks accompanied by a slew of arrests of suspected suicide bombers.
A general belief is starting to grow that the IS, the precursor to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (Isis), stands behind the renewed instability in the country.

Of course. They captured an important city yesterday, and they know they will have a way to the sea with Lebanon. A country that before the rise of Islamism had a huge Christian and even a big Jewish population. They were its economic engines, btw.
I knew a lot of Lebanese Christians who had fled, and a few Lebanese Jews, when I lived in a place with a heavy immigration from the country (decades ago - this has been going on for a long time). They were wonderful people and it’s tragic that it has finally come down to this.
Islam is incompatible with modernity.
There has always been a huge Christian population in Lebanon. Remember the Christian militias of the early 90’s?
ISIS would not be welcome there. They are better off moving north towards Turkey or South to Saudi.

It appears to me that ISIS has puffed themselves up to the point where they believe they are invincible. Looks like they may divide their forces if they attack Lebanon and expose their flank to air attacks by Egypt and Israel.
Well, I’m just a sergeant, so others may have different opinions.
Lebanon is weak and will fall. Lebanon has a large Christian population. They will be the first to be killed. Lebanon has seen wars before from the savages.
I doubt the bearded savage part of Lebanon will put up much resistance. The Christian part of Lebanon is minority. How can they fight?

Everything I read about Lebanon was that before the 1970s, it was one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Muslims ruin everything they touch.
Lebanon needs to work with Israel here. They need their help against a mutual enemy.
They should have went after Iran. Then you would have a contiguous Iraq, Iran, Afganistan. Add Syria to the mix and there is your caliphate. On top of that imagine ISIS with Iran’s nukes?
I have to think Iran would be a hard target. It’s fairly stable without the fractional tribal warfare of Syria or the others so they would be united against an attack.

The Saudis funded ISIS at first. The Iranians are brand X. If they see ISIS coming at them, they will freak out.
I remember my days in Hotel Phoenecia, Hamra street, drinking ouzo and having lunch in Zahleh and visiting Baalbek. Sheesh, what a place Lebanon once was.

Israel would almost certainly help. They have a very good relationship with Jordan.
