An experimental underwater speaker system designed to repel invasive Asian carp is up and running in Genoa, University of Minnesota officials confirmed this week.
The announcement is a win for researcher Peter Sorensen and his team from the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Center, who have been raising funds for the project since April, but at least one local stakeholder is voicing concerns about the projects impact on the Mississippi River.
Mark Clements owns and operates Clements Fishing Barge below Lock and Dam No. 8, where the speakers are installed. He fears the sounds emitted which researchers say have been proven in a lab setting to drive away invasive Asian carp will impede the migration of native fish species.

that on the speakers ought to repel anything.
Isn't that the argument that the owner of the fishing barge was trying to make ?
Walleyes dig Yoko.
Why do they hate the carp? They’re just looking for a better life.
Fish bigots!
What about the “dreamer child carp” that are risking everything for a better life? Can they place them into lakes with good foster families?
“asian carp” is racist according to Minnesota democrat lawmakers.
The rise of the Anti-Carp was foretold!
Arise my brothers of the Sea and fight!
Huh? Why go to all that fuss? I know absolutely nothing about this except that I just found 78,000 google results for “asian carp recipes”.
You can get a twenty dollar bowl of jambalaya in New Orleans if you look hard enough, certainly somebody down that way can pretend that this is fancy one-percenter food that should be “harvested” to extinction.
I can’t resist.
I once had dinner with Yo-Yo Ma in New York. There were some others there. (He was the only big-shot at the table, I was young and kept my mouth shut.)
Somehow (I think) there was someone in the restaurant that knew who he was, and that person had told the waitress. In any case, the waitress, at the end of the meal, turned to a (half) Asian lady who happened to be at our table, right beside me, and said:
“...And I just want to say what an honor it is to meet you, and how sorry I am for your loss. As a musician, John Lennon is in my heart every day...”
Brothers of the river, perhaps!

The disclaimer near the beginning must be in jest, too. “Professionals”???
Exactly. The carp are Dreamer Carp. They’re just doing the job of being invasive foreign fish and destroying the eco-system something domestic fish refuse to do.
Ono, I don't get the yoko, if it is one. I also must inquire if this might be a police matter? Surely even the most blasé Newyawka must have noticed half an Asian lady at your table.
"So Yo-Yo, know any Beatles songs? Pass the sushi."
I cant resist.
At least try, old man!
LOLOLOLOL!
Are these worthy Oriental Gentlemen-Fish good to eat, or what? How would a eurocentric hegemonic imperial patriarchal gender-normative colonialist racist cook go about preparing one. Sauté, Court Bouillon? Fry? Do they taste sorta like mud (like most catfish)... like chicken .. alligator ...what?
What wine? A saucy Sancerre, perhaps, a Pouilly Fuissé, a Boone's Farm, what? Speak, Ice Shaver!
*snort*
Mud-ish.
PBR.
Fish bigots!
