I read somewhere that the Russian version of IFF is limited to identifying Russian vs. Not-Russian. So a Malaysian airliner would show up as Not-Russian as would a Ukrainian aircraft.

That would mean a loss of money for Soros if the insurance companies do not pay off the loss.

I suppose that lets Vlad look good, to be confident that platform data (reduced res, of course) would keep Mother Russia from being (arguably) culpable for the deaths of 298, perhaps knowing Obama would hesitate doing anything Putin might want, just to show Pooty-Poot who’s more manly, in a bathhouse-kinda way.

Depending on the (our?) sensor’s capabilities (which Vlad prolly knows better than Barry), there may not be the kind of info from that platform to recreate a YouTube-style video that the world would expect of the blast-off, rise of the SA missile and its take-down of MH17. Barry would also avoid showing those cards.

Or if the satellite would inevitably show a Ukrainian military transport 2 miles in tow of MH17, that might make Kiev look bad, eh? Ah, but Barry might be able to have that Photoshopped out, Vladi!

“I have also read reports that the Identify Friend or Foe (IFF) was not functioning.”

Commercial airlines do not have an IFF. Military does. Commercial has a transponder that enhances the radar return and transmits flight parameters and flight ID.

“No IFF + off course would prima facie indicate a hijacking.”

Not so. It happens.

7700 squawk on the transponder is prima faci of hijacking.

Squawking 7600 is indication of loss of com.

Being ‘off course’ and not squawking are not indications of a hijacking, not at all. Aviation professionals would view such an incident are a likely electrical failure or degradation of some sort.

“After 9/11/01 no responsible government can afford that risk, especially for an aircraft originating from a Muslim nation”

Flight originated from the Netherlands.

With respect to your ‘commercial’ pilot friend, altitude is your friend.

Flying over the top, over the max altitude of MANPADS is done all the time and is the safest course of action. And an SA-12 just barely makes it to 12,000-15,000 feet. . .well below the altitude of the jet and only when the target is non-maneuvering.

No max maneuveing is necessary at altitude when defending against MANPADs because the MANPAD bleeds off energy quickly when it has to adjust its trajectory to continue its tail-chase pursuit of the target. Min-G to a 2-G, an “S” turn and the heater runs out of energy and can’t make the altitude. The heater does not fly a lead-pursuit profile because it tracks the heat source, it flies a tail-chase. (Best it can do is leading-edge track the heat source but that is all).

Your reference to the SA-11 is completely different than a heater as it is a semi-active radar-guided missile with a max altitude of around 20,000 feet or so. That is ballistic altitude, not based on a maneuvering target.

So, bottom line, the ranges and altitudes published are for ballistic shots and do not take into consideration aircraft maneuvering. The 6-9 G stuff is an end-game maneuver when you are basically dog-fighting the missile when it closes.

I will not go point by point, no time, but quickly:

“1. The route was chosen by Ukraine ATC in Kiev. Pilot accepted the route, although he was not obliged to do so.”

In positive control airpsace the aircrew must accept the routing unless they have an emergency, weather or some sort of unusual circumstance that prohibits them from doing so.

“3. Corridor was closed for civilian traffic BELOW 30,000 ft. MH17 was sailing only 200ft above restricted airspace.”

It was above the min altitude established.

“5. Acquisition radar was active at the time MH17 was shot down.”

Yes, that is why it locked on the jet and launched the missile.

“6. Kiev ATC reported of MH17 being shot down the moment it went off radar.”

The ‘moment’ of the shoot down? Link?

“. . . On several of the videos chaff could be seen falling down, indicating the presence of someone’s fighter jets.”

Jet gets blown up mid-flight at hundreds of miles an hour, falls tens of thousands of feet, gets torn apart by aerodynamic forces, not to mention the thousands of pieces of clothing and papers on the jet get ripped apart by the airstream. . .of course you will see stuff fluttering down.

Back to work. . .

The Great Circle Mapper App will show the same thing.

Thanks! I pre-date apps. I learned to plot great circle courses with a string and a globe as a SAC navigator in the 1950's.

RT is full of crap. Satellite data shows the launch came from rebel controlled territory.

Even Putin’s comments tell the same by what they do not say. (Basically Putin argued that the Ukrainians are at fault because they do not wish to cede territory to Russia, thereby causing the fight.)

Well yes RT is full of crap, but I think it’s always interesting and sometimes instructive to hear what the other side is putting out - another variant of the story - this time repeated by Fox News today - was that the Russians were saying that Ukraine shot the plane down because they were trying to kill Putin and thought he was on it - the reports are that Putin’s approval ratings have been going up during this whole tragedy in spite of Russia’s apparent involvement, and if the Russian people are being fed stories like these, it might help explain the disconnect.....

I would imagine that it’s easier today to find an app than to find a globe and a piece of string. And certainly more portable.
