Why do hundreds of “Journalism” schools graduate people too stupid to grasp the concept of a shortage of public toilet facilities?
They’re saluting our Democrat Party?
There are a number of startups in India building public toilets that collect waste, use extremeophile bacteria to break it down quickly and create biogas. The biogas is sometimes used to generate heat for hot water so members can do laundry, power generators to charge cell phones or simply heat water to encourage sanitation. You could use the gas for cooking, but no one wants to.

Corporate Executives take note. You want these public crappers writing your software?
Next time I call an outsourced customer service I’ll ask ‘Where did you move your bowels today?”
“See, this is why we can’t have nice things.”
Asking the important questions!
I am in a nice hotel in Dallas. I wonder if they would respect my “culture” of strolling out onto their manicured lawn and taking a squat?
Buried in the article is the answer: "Apart from poverty and lack of lavatories, one of the reasons often cited to explain open defecation in India is the ingrained cultural norm making the practice socially accepted in some parts of the society."
It is part of the culture; eliminating public defecation will require eliminating that defective and primitive culture. Despite the hype at the end of the article, eliminating such a defecating and defective culture will require efforts spanning generations, not simply a decade.
Is this like the wild bears and the woods thing?
At least they are using gutters now. My dad said they would squat and drop right in the middle of walkways during the WWII.
About a month ago I was in the restroom at a local mall. I picked up some paper in the area by the sinks and put it into the trash. While doing that task, I mentioned to a black woman in the room, “I do not understand why women are so messy with their paper towels and miss the trash can and never bother to pick the towel up and put them into the bin.”
Her response was this, “I know. Last week a woman came into the bathroom and proceeded to defecate on the floor next to the toilet. Then walked away and we had to clean it up.”
So this lady was an employee, and had to clean up that mess. She was shaking her head when she told me.
Since I live in the upper Midwest this was a new sort of wrinkle to me.
This is not just the Indians, even the French do this! Many cultures defecate in the open!
That’s the way they did it when I was in RVN...what are you going to do? It’s a force of nature, that’s why every single day I thank God for running water and plumbing.
We have so much to be thankful for.
India’s very large population, and a big segment of that living in extreme poverty and without proper homes mean that these kind of problems will exist and are magnified because of the large population. There is also need for attitude changes among the very poor.
Because they’re afraid of the bear?
