Today, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, (R-Calif.) requested that Jennifer OConnor of the White House Counsels office testify next week.
In a letter, Issa requested O’Connor’s appearance at a hearing on Tuesday at 9:30a, a day after IRS Commissioner John Koskinen is scheduled to testify. The Tuesday hearing is entitled, IRS Obstruction: Lois Lerners Missing E-Mails, Part II.”
In a series of disclosures that began last Friday, the IRS notified Congress that it has “lost” two years worth of key emails to and from IRS manager Lois Lerner, a key figure in the tax agency’s alleged targeting of conservative groups. The loss was attributed to a computer crash.
Then, the IRS reportedly told Congress that it’s unable to produce emails from six more IRS employees involved in the investigation. They include Nikole Flax, the chief of staff to former IRS Commissioner Steven Miller. Miller has been fired.
Furthermore, the IRS reportedly told Congress that Lerner’s hard drive can never be produced for inspection because it has been “recycled.”
The eyebrow-raising revelations have prompted widespread skepticism from the public as well as information technology experts who insist that all traces of such documents cannot be accidentally obliterated.
The conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch received documents through a Freedom of Information request that show Flax approved a request from Lerner to meet with Justice Department officials. The purpose was to consider a suggestion from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) to criminally prosecute certain nonprofit groups for allegedly engaging in prohibited political activity.
Not all emails have been forever lost. Some that were obtained by the House Oversight Committee shows that Lerner and an associate sent over a million pages of data, including confidential taxpayer information, to the FBI. Critics say that may have been illegal.
In his letter today, Issa writes, From May 2013 until November 2013, you served in a career position at the IRS as the Counselor to the Commissioner, with the primary task of navigat[ing] the scandal over [the IRSs] reviews of conservative organizations. In this position, you had a direct and substantial role in the IRSs response to congressional requests for documents, including documents sent or received by Ms. Lerner. In fact, IRS Chief Counsel William Wilkins, when asked who was supervising the collection of, documents relating to the committees requests for material, responded Tom Kane and Jennifer [OConnor] are the two I would identify as the key supervisors. Given your prominent role in supervising the IRSs document review and production processes, you likely knew or should have known that the IRS was missing a portion of e-mails sent or received by Ms. Lerner responsive to the Committees subpoena.
According to Issa, OConnor was promoted to the White House earlier this year.
No biggy....
All stupid, dilettante amateur posturing that accepts any old bogus proffered script....like emails can be lost when a local hard drive crashes...when nobody with the slightest notion of IT systems believes that in the first place. And it's not a matter of belief, it's a matter of direct, multi-decade professional experience. But Issa, see, he will follow the idea that Lerner's HD crashed until the end of the earth when he should have impounded it over a year ago, work or not, and subpenaed the IT workers who were employed by the IRS at the time for their testimony. Nothing ever comes from these endless hearings because they are being conducted by Issa, Mister "I don't have a second act in my Kabuki theater. Am I supposed to?"
Lerners' hard drives should have been seized on day 1.
I actually like Issa in a general way but him not being a lawyer, only pretending to be one, he is not capable of understanding how much he is actually damaging the entire case against the IRS....by far, the clearest, most direct-evidence case against the admin and to my mind, the most serious.... by his bungling and grasping at stuff that turns out to be worthless. That's because the people on the other side have real lawyers, smart lawyers, REALLY smart lawyers, and they know exactly the mistakes pretend-lawyer Issa is making and they are knowledgeably staging him to sabotage himself. And they are succeeding beautifully. This is exactly what happens when amateurs pretend to be lawyers! If Issa was smart, or smarter, he would realize that. He isn't and he doesn't, and this investigation is being botched badly.
Issa has no balls, he is just pleased as punch to have Greta rub his leg once a month and call him "Sir".
I had very high hopes for Issa in the beginning of the 2011 term, but he has proven himself to be just another "go along to get along DC insider".
Thank God that Trey Gowdy got boner to let him head up the hildabeastbenhur select committee, because if Issa had been chosen, it would go no where.
They are going to blame their crappy backups and limited server space to a lack of funding...
Agreed, and well said!
BTW, Issa made his millions by inventing a truck back-up device - - - sort of what he does now at taxpayer expense: when the going gets tough, BACK UP!
