The backtracking begins: Hillary hustles to halt fallout from ‘dead broke’ controversy

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was forced to explain — and recast — what she meant when she complained of her family’s financial struggles after leaving the White House.

The subject was broached on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” when host Robin Roberts asked Mrs. Clinton if she could understand America’s head-scratching reaction to her claim that the Clintons were “dead broke” upon leaving the White House and needed to hit the lucative speaking circuit to build their bank accounts.

“Yes I can, but everything in life has to be put into context,” she said, The Hill reported. “As I recall, we were something like $12 million in debt.”

Mrs. Clinton then recalled how her husband, former President Bill Clinton, had been born into poverty and had to work hard for his money and career advancements, all the while paying off student loans, The Hill reported.

“We understand what that struggle is because we had student debts — both of us — we had to pay off, we had to work, I had a couple jobs in law school, he had lots of jobs,” Mrs. Clinton told ABC. “We have a life experience clearly different in very dramatic ways from every American, but we also have gone through a lot of the same challenges as many people have.”

On Monday night, to ABC News, she said: “We came out of the White House not only dead broke, but in debt. We had no money when we got there, and we struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages, for houses, for Chelsea’s education. You know, it was not easy.”

Her speaking fees sometimes hit the $200,000 level, while Bill Clinton routinely pockets $500,000 per 45-minute pep talk.

I’ve been telling my granddaughter (twitter etc) ...don’t write anything that you don’t want to see on the front page of the NY Times.

“As I recall, we were something like $12 million in debt.”

Which could have been paid off with just the advance for BJ's autobiography. Hillary also received nearly $3 million of the eventual $8 million advance for her memoirs. Both of these payoffs were received in 2001, within 12 months after BJ left office.

On top of that, the Secret Service was paying enough "rent" for a "guard shack" on the grounds of the Clinton mansion in NY to make that mortgage payment every month.

99.9% of the people in the US would have loved to be in that position.

You also had a legal defense fund with millions in donations set up to pay those legal debts.

The best way to handle that is to buy a mansion in an upscale area of Chappaqua, NY

I would appear so, but the MSM’s willingness to do what ever is required is far greater than the ordinary crutch. Think of the wildly differing coverages of the Bush and Clinton during their contests.

The state-rum media will do all they can to paper over her lying. Nothing to see here. Let’s move along. (After all, that’s where move-on.org had its origins.) No Republican will ever get this sympathetic treatment.

The Clintons are the real American Hustle, that is, if you don’t mean Sharpton and Jackson, and of course Obama.

Hillary's biggest weakness is her penchant for going into televised interviews and recounting the good old days that never were.

Reinventing your own history has been a Clinton specialty old trick since day one , but the old tricks don't work so well in the YouTube generation.

The Clinton's just have to stand in awe of Obama's ability re invent his past on the fly and bamboozle people who know better

This was already a powder puff type interview, with the host doing her utmost to spoonfeed the right answers to Hillary. Even still, she trips over her own forked tongue!

Hillary...How hard a decision was it to change you name to Clinton after being married to Bubba for 5 years?? Oh...It was a polling thing....He lost an election and voila...you became Mrs. Hillary Clinton.

And then there was another hard decision...Adding Rodham...to distance yourself from some of his ummmm....hard, low down decisions.
