Chuck Todd told Matt Lauer on Wednesday that the White House was “caught flat-footed” on the backlash against the prisoner swap for Sergeant Bergdahl.
“I’ve had a few aides describe it to me as ‘we didn’t know that they were going to Swift Boat Bergdahl’,” Todd said, “And Matt, of course, that’s a reference to that political fight back in 2004 over John Kerry’s military service which became so controversial in that campaign. So there’s some fighting words there.”

Obama is so tone deaf when it comes to the military that this thing blew up in his face. He thought he could just trot out the Bergdahl parents at the Rose Garden and he’d have himself another “I killed bin Laden” moment.
Even before the sketchy nature of Bergdahl’s “capture” become known, sane people were questioning whether releasing the 5 jihadis that the Taliban wanted the most was a good idea.
And Obama’s nonsensical assertion that this is in keeping with our country’s policy of “leaving no soldier behind” (”Period. Full Stop.”) fails the test of argumentum reductio ad absurdum. In other words, if that policy is an absolute, what if the Taliban had asked for the 5 jihadis plus Michelle Obama plus their two kids plus a trillion dollars plus an armed nuclear missile? At some point, you just can’t make the deal.
The difference between Jean-Francois Kerre` and Bowe Bergdahl is that one married into wealth, and leveraged these advantages into high political office, and Bergdahl has not yet made his mark.
But given the proclivity of Democrats to reward their version of “bad boys”, Bowe Bergdahl is almost certainly destined for better things.
Too bad things went sideways for Timothy McVeigh. He could have been another “rising star” today.
