The McConnell challenge that wasn’t
Politico/Playbook ^ | 5/20/14 | JAMES HOHMANN

Posted on 05/20/2014 12:16:53 PM PDT by Baynative

Matt Bevin seemed like the ideal candidate to challenge Mitch McConnell. The handsome and personable businessman, a father of nine, impressed national conservative groups looking for a chance to knock off the Senate Republican leader.

These groups, from the Senate Conservatives Fund to FreedomWorks, the Tea Party Patriots and the Madison Project, invested more than $1 million in the Kentucky GOP primary. Bevin himself spent more than $3 million, including $1 million of his own fortune.

And, yet, polls indicate he’s going to get creamed Tuesday.

A lot of lessons to be learned here. Power of incumbency and vulnerability of novice campaign assembly and media influence; to name just two.

If only McConnell was half as nasty going after Reid as he was to the Tea Party.

While it’s an uphill fight for Bevin, what gives with posting a leftwing article about how all is lost when the election isn’t over?

It’s truly amazing to see so much effort being put out to discourage the average Kentucky voter.

So although I support and voted for Bevin, I do expect that McConnell will win the primary. The best I can see out of this is that McConnell and their campaign will see how much of the ‘Base’ truly wants him gone and that might, just might, make him campaign harder against Grimes in the General election.

Wasn’t Cruz down big just before the election?

Well crap..... I donated to his campaign twice... I was really hoping that McConnell would go down in flames. Maybe we will get a big surprise tonight.

The article should be “The article that wasn’t” because no results are in yet.

Just say’n.

Perfect result in November?

GOP wins Senate, but McConnell loses to Dem. Now THAT would be one helluva message.

McConnell is worse than a garden variety wimpy RINO. He actually declared war on the Tea Party, and not just in his state, but nationwide.

He has forfeited support in the general election.

He may beat Bevin, but can he beat the Democrat? I'm not sure McConnell is electable in this race.

Romney and the GOPs dirty tricks got Romney the nomination, but in the end, Romney was unelectable.

Did Bevin really come out in support of dog and cock fighting? Fox reported that last night.

Is this an open or closed primary? It makes a difference if Democrats are allowed to vote for their favorite Republicans.

I don’t believe Romney was unelectable. A bit moderate, maybe, but he is a good man with a good heart who was painted as callous by the media in order to fool people into electing a man who, along with his wife, has no feelings or compassion for anyone but himself.

Romney didn't get elected, ergo, he was unelectable.

Oy. Way to push the narrative for a fait accompli, Politico...! “So, as we all will know in a few hours, Mark Bevin lost in an embarrassing landslide...”

Shame is definitely a rare commodity among media types, these days...

Saw McConnell on Megyn Kelly’s show last night.

What a nothingburger he is.

No wonder Reid walks all over him.

To have Trent Lott, Bill Frist and Mitch McConnell as GOP Senate leaders is the best thing that ever happened to the Democrats.

And the same thing happens to Boehner.. giving us Sen Maj. Leader Cruz and Speaker of House Gowdy.

Well yes, that would be awesome…but no way Boehner loses…McConnell is in some trouble in the general from what I’ve been told. I’m no expert on Kentucky however - but I think this could actually happen.
