My son called from Marine Camp Pendleton, where he has been taking his post boot camp infantry training before MOS school. They were evacuated to the south end, where the Crucible area and Reaper hill have been burned. He drove me all around there when he reported on the 22nd of April, and I recognized it from the news pictures. Pendleton is mostly wilderness, and it’s heartbreaking to see all that beautiful land burn, and moreso because the fire was deliberately set. I was going to go down there Tuesday for his graduation, but they will just get their certificates before being put on the bus for N.C.

I suppose that things have changed. After a hurricane hit Charleston, S.C. in the early 60s, the whole base volunteered to help with the clean-up of the county. I would not be surprised if your son’s group did not help with the fires, even in a supporting role.
