How would you view a man who's stockpiled a lifetime supply of old-fashioned lightbulbs because he believes low-energy bulbs could lead to blindness? You might well dismiss him as dotty. But the man in question, John Marshall, is no crank. In fact, he's one of Britain's most eminent eye experts, the professor of ophthalmology at the University College London Institute of Ophthalmology. So concerned is he that he has boxes stacked with old-fashioned incandescent lightbulbs at home. 'I bulk bought incandescent lightbulbs before the Government made it illegal to import them,' he says. 'I can't give you an exact number, but I have enough to see me out.'

"The medical experts who refuse to use low-energy lightbulbs in their homes: Professors have stocked up on old-style bulbs to protect against skin cancer and blindness. So should YOU be worried?"
Possible health effects of CFL's: Eye Damage, Migraines, Skin Cancer
mercury poisoning as well, as these things will occasionally break and release mercury vapors.
And the immediate problem of government overreaching.
Ok, once you get past blindness and mercury vapors you have the joy of knowing liberal elites like Al Gore and John Karry wake up every morning knowing they got to push you around.
The doctor shouldn’t have a problem with LED lamps, then.
Unlike CFLs, LED lamps have very well defined emissions spectra, although they may (but don’t have to) have more blue light relative to the illumination level than an incandescent. However, there should be virtually no ultraviolet.
I am stocked up here too. Also, did not have to consider changing any fixtures to accommodate the blasted things.
I stocked up on the old ones but having them burn out so quickly I decided to use the new white (bland) light ones in the warm sunny months and save the cheap warm yellow ones for the cooler darker months.
That way they the (old ones) will last longer.
I really don’t need the yellow light this time of year in in summer.
For home lighting, since you need a grid of them, that should be easy to fix: just add some red and green LEDs to the mix.
So, where is apologetic Fred Upton on making up for his past stupidity...
seems like he is nowhere, thus letting implementation of the ban continue.
The B.U.L.B. act failed to pass.

I got 12 of my grandma`s oil lamps we used in the horsebarn `n planty of oil too.

And they only cost 40 times as much as the incandescent lamps they replace !!!
Stock up now !!
LOL...
I don’t mind LED light, CFL’s on the other hand are horrible... I’ve replaced most of my bulbs to LED and has helped considerably with the electricity bills.
I like LEDs. They last a lot longer and the light quality is better. Also, the price is dropping.
LED bulbs are very expensive—$10-$30 at Home Depot—and I find they don’t last as promised. They seem to last a shorter time than ordinary old incandescents and I see no reduction in my electric bill. Adding another $50 a month to my expenses on top of rising energy costs is not in the budget.
I guess my eyes will be toast soon...I’ve been working under Flourescent Lights in the office for 40 years.
As a side note, Dr. John Ott, a a photographer and cinematographer who produced time lapse movies for Disney, created and sold “Ott lights” (OttLite Technology), full-spectrum lighting, but shielded from harmful UV. They are still being sold.
Ott did a series of experiments to discover the best form of lighting, most conducive for growth and health, for plants and animals. They further improved the quality of his light bulbs.
“OttLite describes its “508 technology” as providing a balance of brightness and contrast that reduces glare and eyestrain and produces very low heat. These products, called “High Definition Natural Lighting”, are marketed online and at lighting, crafting and hardware stores worldwide.”
Stock up on light bulbs, Mandrake.
Costco has very well priced LED’s lot cheaper than HD. You don’t have to buy and replace all at once, when a bulb burns out your replace. And if you are replacing 5-10-20 bulbs or more, yes you surely will see savings. Replacing a 60watt to 8 watt x 10 is 520 watts over x years. Every LED i’ve replaced older bulbs with in the last 3 years still run great, a few on my outside lamps never get turned off, they run all day and still are on.
I still like the look of old incandescents for certain aesthetic options, I don’t think they should be banned, but the let the market decide...and LED’s start dropping quickly in price IMO the consumer will really appreciate the savings in the long run. As I said, just do one at a time and the cost is not a big deal, you’ll will pay more running 60 watt bulbs over time.
They both do, and they both use phosphors to convert UV into visible white light.
