Here, I switched from one 60W bulb to two 4W bulbs in two table lamps. From 60 Watts to 8 Watts is a considerable savings from year to year. For this one desk lamp, it uses 36 LEDs running off of the USB port on a hub to the computer, for 500mA of power (max for a single USB port). Pretty bright, too! And it can run off of batteries as well if the power fails, as it sometimes does here. Handy. :)
Plus, it came with a USB power cord to go along with its built-in battery compartment. If I use rechargeable batteries and a small solar panel to recharge, it costs practically nothing to use a lot of the time.

Thanks for clearing up the longevity question.
I’ve just installed a few LEDs, never did install any fluorescents, and was concerned about how soon I might have to replace them.

No worries. I used to use a couple of other, smaller LED bulbs before, but they were not your typical ones so I hesitate to mention them since they are not the type you normally get at the local store, Pretty sure they lasted more than a couple of years though, but they were so small it seems the lack of sufficient heat dissipation finally did them in. Hope these newer ones last longer than that, but even so, the much smaller power useage makes them quite appealing here. Plus, less heat in the summertime is always a good thing.
