The Obama administration released thousands of convicted criminals -- including murderers and those convicted of sexual assault -- while they were awaiting deportation proceedings, according to a new report.
The Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington-based advocacy group, released the statistics on Monday, in its latest bid to draw attention to what analysts with the organization say are lax enforcement practices by the Obama administration.
The numbers showed that in 2013, Immigration and Customs Enforcement released 36,007 "convicted criminal aliens" while they were waiting for the outcome of their deportation cases. They represented a total of 88,000 convictions.
The majority of the cases involved individuals convicted on lower-level or nonviolent offenses, like auto theft, drunk-driving and drug charges. But many were involved in more serious cases.
According to the report, the 88,000 convictions included:
-- 193 homicide convictions
-- 426 sexual assault convictions
-- 303 kidnapping convictions
-- More than 1,000 aggravated assault convictions

When the Republicans are back in power, a good bet would be to build a “detention center” right next to the border, whose purpose it would be to hold those awaiting deportation after serving sentences for violent crimes, and to trickle them across the border only at the rate in which the Mexican government agrees to take them.
This would accomplish a bunch of things.
1) Criminals who had served their sentences would still be detained, not allowed to run loose while awaiting deportation. And those involved in gangs could be segregated from each other.
2) Since just kicking them across the border means that they would immediately join one of the cartels, and the Mexican government says it cannot take too many at once; this would mean that the Mexicans would have to provide an armed escort to take them deep in country, away from the cartels, prior to release.
3) This detention center would be under the control of the US Customs office, and their weird “duty free” rules, in which they can hold people indefinitely without habeus corpus.
4) The detention center would most expressly be used to hold non-Mexican foreigners, instead of the “catch and release” they use now.

303 kidnapping convictions
1,075 aggravated assault convictions
1,160 stolen vehicle convictions
9,187 dangerous drug convictions
16,070 drunk or drugged driving convictions
303 flight escape convictions

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. is endorsing a proposal that would reduce prison sentences for people convicted of dealing drugs, the latest sign of the Obama administration’s retrenchment in the so-called war on drugs.
