There is a point I believe in secondary Syph that penicllin is useless against it so even for ol’ Al it may very well have been too late by the time he went to jail.

Al contracted siph in the early 1930. Alexander Fleming had just started to fool around with penicillin in the late 20’s but I don’t think it was used to cure patients until the 1940’s.
