Extremely misleading headline. The import of the story is NOT that the drugs themselves “cause” the problems, but that HIGH DOSES are associated with the problems.

(Pseudo-Crisis eliminated. Now on to the next one!)

When my teenage daughter was going through her “Angst” period, which included bulimia, she was prescribed an anti depressant, anti anxiety, anti convulsive plus more of the same to help her sleep. All of these had the same side effect which was suicidal thoughts. so to fix al of this, they prescribe Ambilify, to “boost” the effectiveness of the other drugs.

After a few years of dealing with the suicide attempts(thank god she sucks at suicide), a yearlong trip to the residential treatment facility, numerous psychiatric stays, enough cutting to think she was attacked by lycans, spending my entire life savings and a bout with the law, I decided that it was time to take her to “my guy.”

For years I told her doctors, my wife and anyone who would listen that she has way too many meds in her and we should simplify. And everyone told me she was borderline, manically depressed and whatnot. “My guy” is a childhood friend of mine who “dabbled” in pharmaceuticals before realizing his calling was in psychiatry, where he could legally prescribe meds.

Onto the plane, cross country we went. He told us to bring all her meds, which the TSA had a field day with. Basically it was “why so many pills?” which got the response, “none of your damned business.” Got to his house, he told me to go get dinner and come back in an hour. Got back to the house and he told me she is good.

He lowered her meds to two at night to help her sleep and one during the day, for ADHD. For two years now she hasn’t cut, hasn’t been hospitalized and has been functioning. I asked him what he did. Here was his response. “every specialist you see will diagnose her according to his specialty. And he won’t remove her from any other doctors prescriptions for fear of being sued.”

Many times mentally ill folks are on medication. Who’d a thunk perfectly sane people would be killers.

Indeed, this study showed that “suicidal behavior is twice as likely when children and young adults are randomized to antidepressants compared with when they are randomized to placebo.”

So this is saying that these antidepressants at these levels do far more harm than good? If this is so, these pharmaceutical companies and the FDA should be criminally libel for the incredible damage the use of these products have caused.

My child’s school is famous for “suggesting” that these kids get put on drugs instead of being dealt with.

Beware. Medication only masks the symptoms. Underneath that happy, happy person is a crazy when he goes off his meds. Kind of like cats who show affection but really want to eat you.

In other school shootings, information about the shooter’s prescription drug use and other medical history were kept from public records

Completely logical (and should have been known) - you can’t just shut off the bad emotions (depressed, anxious, lonely, afraid) and expect all other emotions to remain unchanged.

These drugs don’t stop you from feeling depressed, they stop you from feeling.

>> So this is saying that these antidepressants at these levels do far more harm than good? <<

I don’t think so. I don’t see any discussion in the article of the number of people who are HELPED by these medications. None at all.

So, for all I know, the people helped may outnumber the people harmed by ten to one, maybe as much as one hundred to one.

Of course, but they have bought more powerful politicians than gun manufacturers can afford.

"With regards to the cohort in discussion, children and young adults, the article is clear that the drugs double the risk of suicidal behavior"

So, for all I know, the people helped may outnumber the people harmed by ten to one, maybe as much as one hundred to one.

I don't know what your definition of "help" could possibly be, but any drug that makes depressed children and young adults twice as likely to kill themselves certainly isn't helping!

The risk danger in this is the increased dosages especially in younger persons would be an adverse reaction called Serotonin Syndrome.

Essentially the Serotonin located mainly in the digestive tract migrates to the brain. The potency of this chemical in the brain is pretty much like LSD. It may be the individuals lower tolerance to the medication or it can be an over the counter cold medication which has also been documented to trigger it.

I saw a person go through it from beginning stage till a near stroke and extreme hallucinations and even at one point unconsciousness. The most disturbing part of it all was the extreme lack of ability of doctors involved including the prescribing one to diagnose it much less recognize it.

Could these meds under the wrong circumstances trigger a person to where they did violent acts that if not taking the medications they would have never considered doing? IMO Yes it's very possible if they were having this adverse reaction.

Doctors freak at writing a prescription for drugs like Valium, Xanax, etc which will not cause this to happen {the antidote to Serotonin actually} and write antidepressant medications out like candy in ignorance.
