Since you asked.....I went to se RR speak at my uni in the 80’s. The intrusion was MINIMAL compared to present times. The band instrumenrs had to be checked before hand...but that was the most invasive.

Yes, I think they would have said the same thing.

As I have said before, the local government administration idiots who thought it would be a great idea to invite either the POTUS or the First Lady to speak at a joint 5 school graduation ceremony went beyond merely stupid.

The onus is on them, and I think the locals should demand their names, publically denounce them, and look at firing all of them.
