FWIW the movie did tell the story as Carter wanted it told. I didn’t think that it did anything to prove his innocence, at the most there was reasonable doubt.

As I understand the case, there is not now, and never was any amount of "reasonable doubt". There was a single very liberal judge who threw out the conviction, and at that point too many years had elapsed to retry the case.
