Like Bush, Many Republicans Are Moderate on Immigration
FiveThirtyEight ^ | Nate Silver

Posted on 04/15/2014 5:45:45 PM PDT by ObamahatesPACoal

The Republican Party has grown more conservative over the past couple of decades. But news commentators sometimes wrongly imply that GOP voters take an extremist position on every issue.

As I described on Friday, for example, Jeb Bush’s support of Common Core educational standards isn’t likely to hurt him if he runs for president in 2016; the issue is neither all that relevant to most Republicans nor all that divisive. If candidates running to Bush’s right are looking for a wedge issue, they’ll probably have some better choices.

Its now “extreme” to want traditional, common sense laws enforced.

Wonderboy Nate Silver seems to ignore McCain/Flake’s approval, McCain’s censure and Obama’s approval. Instead he uses bogus polling from the MSM.

And I'm supposed to take the rest of this seriously?

No such thing as little bit pregnant. Either you are or not.
Immigration is a straightforward issue. We should welcome immigrants who are either well funded or have skills in demand. That is what other good countries do such as Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and other successful countries.

I guess it’s now considered extreme to want the Mexican cartels to stay out of the USA. It’s only a matter of time before the cartels corrupt our police and behead reporters. We will have our esteemed Congressmen to thank for turning the USA into Mexico. Enforce the laws, idiots.

MEMO TO JEB BUSH:  Instead of getting that degree in Latin American affairs, you might have been wise to get a degree in AMERICAN HISTORY!  Since you're obviously so fond of Latin America, perhaps there's an elective office waiting for you somewhere in Latin America? Oh wait, THEY have very rigid CITIZENSHIP and RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS down there.

In fact, your wife's home country (that'd be MEXICO) has a heavily defended FENCE across its SOUTHERN BORDER!

never mind

And I suggest that you other alleged Republicans read the thoughts of several of the Founding Fathers before the next election.

WASHINGTON ON IMMIGRATION "The policy or advantage of immigration taking place in a body (I mean the settling of them in a body) may be much questioned; for, by so doing, they retain the language, habits, and principles (good or bad) which they bring with them.  Whereas by an intermixture with our people, they, or their descendants, get assimilated to our customs, measures, laws; in a word, soon become one people." George Washington in a letter to John Adams

JEFFERSON ON IMMIGRATION "Every species of government has its specific principles. Ours perhaps are more peculiar than those of any other in the universe. It is a composition of the freest principles of the English constitution, with others derived from natural right and natural reason. To these nothing can be more opposed than the maxims of absolute monarchies. Yet, from such, we are to expect the greatest number of emigrants. They will bring with them the principles of the governments they leave, imbibed in their early youth; or, if able to throw them off, it will be in exchange for an unbounded licentiousness, passing, as is usual, from one extreme to another. It would be a miracle were they to stop precisely at the point of temperate liberty. These principles, with their language, they will transmit to their children. In proportion to their numbers, they will share with us the legislation. They will infuse into it their spirit, warp and bias its direction, and render it a heterogeneous, incoherent, distracted mass." That xenophobic radical, Thomas Jefferson

Mr. Jefferson's concerns go right to the heart of the questions of uncontrolled immigration and, in Obozo's case,  natural born citizenship, don't they?

We can’t count on the Republican Party on immigration reform. There are too many traitors in both Houses. Take a look at the Senate: http://www.cis.org/renshon/immigration-reform-republican-controlled-senate-pt-1

“The original 2013 Senate immigration bill was passed in the 18-member Senate Judiciary Committee, which is split 10(D) and 8 (R), with three Republican votes: Graham (S.C.), Flake (Ariz.), and Hatch (Utah).

The full Senate is currently divided 52 Democrats, 46 Republicans, and 2 independents. The immigration bill passed by a vote of 68-32. In that vote, all 52 Democrats voted yes, both independents voted with the Democrats, and 14 of the 46 Republicans voted with the Democrats.”

And now Cantor is working to sneak in a bill “under the radar”.

last Sunday, he described immigrants who come to the United States illegally looking for work as having committed an “act of love.”

Clive Bundy provides for his family by grazing cattle on "public land". Would Jeb agree that that is also an "act of love"?

Before Obama used the phrase "fundamentally change America" Bush used the phrase "new America". Obama, the GOPe, and the dems are finishing GW's dream...

For Bush it means a whole "new America". His dream.

THE "NEW AMERICAN"
..........<

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

Our future cannot be separated from the future of Latin America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. A solid majority of ALL US citizens want illegal border crossings stopped. ‘Nuff said.

Supporting illegals and amnesty means supporting treason; rewarding the breaking of our laws; taking jobs from Americans; and applauding the destruction of our country.

I’m moderate on immigration too.

No deal at all on immigration till the border is truly secure and then we can talk about immigration and not before. After all, talk of amnesty is kind of pointless when illegals make amnesty for themselves by coming right back after they’re deported.

Seems pretty moderate to me.

One of the other threads saw a poster say he had read Pat Buchanan’s books, books like “Death of a Superpower”. Chances are, people don’t know what is going on but there are many good sources including Buchanan’s books to see what is going on and has already occurred from what I read at least, in California. I don’t personally know but I do read.
