Manila (AFP) - The biggest Muslim rebel group in the Philippines signed an historic pact Thursday to end one of Asia's longest and deadliest conflicts, promising to give up their arms for an autonomous homeland.
Following four decades of fighting that has claimed tens of thousands of lives, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) signed the peace deal with President Benigno Aquino's government at a high-profile ceremony in Manila.
"The comprehensive agreement on Bangsamoro is the crowning glory of our struggle," MILF chairman Murad Ebrahim said at the signing ceremony, using a local term that refers to a Muslim homeland.
"With this agreement the legitimate aspirations of the Bangsamoro and the commitment of the government of the Philippines to recognise those aspirations are now sealed."
The pact makes the MILF and the government partners in a plan to create a southern autonomous region for the Philippines' Muslim minority with locally elected leaders by mid-2016.
"What is being presented before us now is a path that can lead to a permanent change in Muslim Mindanao," Aquino said at the ceremony, attended by more than 1,000 people.

The Muzies already have an autonomous region, the AARM, in western Mindanao. Most are pretty much isolated in a small area among the 7,107 islands that make up the Philippines.
I have yet to see a Muslim in my 5 years here on Cebu.
While I do not care for Muslims, we have to realize that they are all over the world, and probably as many, or more in the US as there are here.
The Philippines is an extremely devout Christian (Catholic) country. Every town has a Catholic church, many, if not most, of them are older then America.

From what I can tell, this sort of replaces the old agreement that set up the AARM, but the Philippine news reports I have read are rather sketchy on the details.

They have always had a base, western Mindanao. It remains to be seen how this will work out. One thing about the Philippines, political correctness is no where to be found. I spent a lot of time in Davao City. The mayor does not tolerate any garbage from the few muzzies there, or anyone for that matter. It is one of the most law abiding cities I have ever been too. A missionary asked me if I could help them build an airstrip in the mountains. It is an interesting place.
I see more an more of them up here in Angeles; not males, but a lot of girls with the hijab running little street stands.
Love your comment. IIRC, the MILF split off from the MNLF when they signed a peace deal with the govt. Look for another splinter group to keep doing what muslims do.
Um, doesn’t that mean they won?
Look at the bright side. Having them in one place is easier to wipe them out in case of a conflict, rather than looking for them among the population.

Yes, there are Muzies everywhere on Earth, There is, no doubt, a mosque in Cebu City, just as in Detroit, but I have not heard of any Muzies in my area, or anywhere outside of the big city. My wife will have to point out a Muzie scarf
when we are in the city, which is very seldom.
I think we will have to go next week to pick up my 13a visa.
