Why Mitch McConnell's Opponent Smells Blood in the Water

A top campaign advisor to Alison Lundergan Grimes, the Democratic challenger to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in Kentucky, scoffed at the notion McConnell is "invincible" in a new memo set to be released Friday.... after The New York Times published a lengthy analysis of the unprecedented nature of a potential McConnell loss.

The memo delves into the details of why the Grimes campaign believes McConnell is more vulnerable than ever.

First, McConnell is devoting precious time and energy to a challenge from the right in Republican Matt Bevin, with the primary on May 20. Hurst also argues Grimes has grassroots and polling advantages. He points out that, for the last seven months, "our campaign has steadily polled ahead of or in a dead-heat with Mitch McConnell," including the recent Bluegrass Poll in February in which Grimes had a 4-point lead. He also emphasizes Grimes' 12-point advantage with women in that poll.

"Our multimillion-dollar war chest will allow us to go toe-to-toe with the McConnell campaign and tout Alison’s message in every corner of the Commonwealth."

The other points in the memo focus on what Hurst described as Grimes' edge in grassroots organizing, while also touting her 20-point jobs plan for Kentucky. "Mitch McConnell has never been so unpopular nor has he run against a candidate as focused and disciplined as Alison Lundergan Grimes," Hurst writes in his conclusion. "McConnell has met his match – and frankly, his replacement."

In a statement, McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton said: "Alison Lundergan Grimes is a new face for the same tired old ideas of Barack Obama and the national liberals. Her anti-coal, big-spending, pro-union boss platform is severely out of touch with Kentucky while Mitch McConnell is championing the fresh, new ideas of liberty and free enterprise to move our Commonwealth forward.

McConnell has STUPIDLY declared war on the Republican base. If he loses, it’s his own STUPID fault.

Grimes knows that if McConnell is her opponent she wins. She also knows that if Bevin is her opponent she is going down in flames.

Exactly, but, how do we get that message through to the folks who will be voting in the GOP Primary on May 20th?

McConnell loses this seat.

Take it to the bank.

But wait a minute...I thought, since McConnell is an enlightened, lovable moderate and all, that he’d get those crossover votes and defeat Grimes! Isn’t that the recipe for Republicans if they want to win, per the Dems?

I thought about calling his office and telling the call taker that he/she needs to be putting out the old resume. Come January 2015 Mitch will be retired from congress. Sadly, his replacement will be another worthless socialist.

There could be a Republican in that seat come 1/15, but only if McConnell had the guts and integrity to leave and let Bevin take the nomination. He has neither.

Dear God, this is so sickening to watch.

ROFL. Oh yes, just looking at him, I can see how "fresh" and "new" his ideas must be!

Absolutely correct.

I don’t recall reading much about a Bevin-Grimes matchup. Anybody have a link?

Well, he thinks he is safe so he is going after those that might be opposing his ideas of a good Republican.

Too bad though as he is the typical Washington insider trying to keep his folks in charge while the people want change.

McConnell loses this seat.

That's probably a given. But does he lose it to a conservative primary opponent or to the [slightly more] fascist candidate?

What surprises me is that the Dems appear to be contesting the race. Normally, when one of their crypto-fascist RINO “opponents” is up for reelection, they punt to help the RUNO keep the seat. They ran the mayor of Tucson against Juan “Lettuce” McBackStabbingAisleReachingRINO in ‘10, for example. After all, if they tried to take a seat from a RINO and he won anyway, he might stop doing their bidding.
