Were there any less contrast on those pages it would render them completely unreadable at any size.
There are trends and there are trends. The trend towards legibility beats the trend towards illegibility by at least a mile...

It sure lacks contrast. Too hard to read more this late at night! There is an easy 'trick' for that if you find it hard to read. 'Right click' on her page and click "select all". It will highlight all text and make it easier to read. Her page seems to highlight well, some - like Free Republic, put a dark blue behind white text.
I agree that she needs to contrast her text/background more.
