KIEV, Ukraine Obama on Monday imposed sanctions on 11 Russian and Ukrainian officials blamed for Russia's military incursion into Crimea, including two top aides to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The sanctions were the most visible sign of U.S. anger at Russia's attempt to absorb the Crimea region of southern Ukraine, reflecting the deepest plunge in U.S.-Russian relations since the Cold War.
The sanctions came in an executive order signed by Obama a day after a Crimea referendum on Sunday aimed at allowing Russia to annex the autonomous region, a vote that the United States says was illegal and would never be recognized by Washington.
During a White House press briefing, Obama warned that continued Russian military intervention in Ukraine would only increase Russia's isolation and exact a greater toll on its economy.
"If Russia continues to interfere in Ukraine, we stand ready to impose further sanctions," he said.

Well, that’ll teach ‘em. Next, Obama will say something snarky about Putin on Snap Chat.
OUCH, That’s gonna hurt! /sarc.
Barry doesn’t care about American sovereignty, why would he care about Crimea’s? Enough fake outrage already, Barry! Elections have catastrophes!
Pffffttt. Putin is laughing so hard he tossed his vodka thru his nose.
I shouldn’t laugh at this, but if I didn’t, I’d start crying.
We have sunk so low since Ronald Reagan was President. Back then you could be sure the Soviet Union wouldn’t dare to do anything lest it incurred the wrath of the US We had fear through strength. We don’t have that today.
Mac daddies threars to Russia are as meaningless as his promises to Americans.
So, he puts “sanctions” on Viktor Yanukovich for being deposed from elected office by bloody revolutionaries funded by George Soros and the CIA?
Actually, we haven’t heard from Yanukovich for some time, and according to one story, he died from a “heart attack.” Possibly that was because he failed to do his job right, and Putin didn’t want him around making any more trouble.
Presumably Obama can do this by Executive Order, without consulting congress, since this is a “national emergency.” A bloody revolution right next door to us, threatening our borders! So we’ll sanction the guys who got kicked out!
Don't take sides. Sit on the fence for now. Chances are bozo may be doing the correct thing for once.
Corruption in russia may be exposed now, and for revenge, russia may do the same in USA. THAT would be cool to watch.
Few years back Russia retaliated against American sanctions by not allowing Americans to adopt Russian orphans. Given the seriousness of the current situation, Putin is considering not to sell their automobiles Ladas and Volgas to the American public.
The British are so right. He is a Pantywaist, but not presidential
You call these sanctions? Selecting a few dozen people for visa restrictions is not exactly a reason to go to war. It is laughable. Better to do nothing at all then such a meaningless action. It shows how powerless we really are.
You do notice that there is hardly any mention, especially on TV, that Obama and EU sent agitators over there to set up the overthrow of Yanukovich in order to install their own NWO sock puppet.
Yanukovich was bad, but an election was coming up. I figure Soros didn’t figure his guy would win.
This is sold on TV as though Putin started this all. What he did, was react. I doubt he would have chose this thing to happen while the Olympics were happening.
So, are these the people who have already been pulling their money out of US banks for the past week?
Putin was an opportunist, he knew he had the pretext to finally do what he’s been wanting to do for years.
The President can do it thru the visa issuing function of the State Department. It is done all the time. Remember Gerry Adams?
