Russia on Thursday banned several websites notable for their criticism of the government and a blog run by prominent opposition leader Alexei Navalny as the Kremlin intensified its crackdown on independent media amid tensions over Ukraine.

The government communications watchdog, Roskomnadzor, said Grani.ru, Kasparov.ru and Yezhednevny Zhurnal (Daily Journal) have carried incitements to unlawful behavior and participation in unauthorized mass gatherings. It said the ban was requested by the Prosecutor General's Office and Internet providers are now under instructions to implement the block.

Obama would do that in one second by executive order if he could get away with it.

I agree. I believe Putin is where Obama wants to go to if he can. I never sense that Obama understands the righteous role that a loyal opposition plays in a healthy and vibrant democracy. Note with Obama his anger and his supporters anger at FOX NEWS and Rush Limbaugh. As for Putin, he most definitely is unwilling to allow opposition. That’s why he won’t allow Ukraine to go its own way.

Former world chess champion and Kremlin critic Garry Kasparov, whose website was taken down within Russia, tweeted: “Obviously Putin is preparing something drastic if he’s blacking out the last sources of truth in Russia. I fear for the safety of Ukraine.”

He added that the sudden censorship could possibly be a ruse because “Putin plays many games [and] always raises the stakes when possible. [The] West is easily bluffed, he finds. […] Good luck getting other countries to give up their nukes or nuclear programs now, with UK/US security guarantees to Ukraine in the trash.”

The more he gets away with the more he can get away with.

He was trying to put monitors in every newsroom.

Just redundancy, Obama already has monitors in every newsroom. The American left is far more efficient and organized than the Russian right.

"The more he gets away with the more he can get away with."

That's axiomatic throughout the ages.

In the case of our generation...only we can be at fault.

Putin does have monitors in the newsrooms, news sites, and newspapers. They not only stop bad news they must promote good pro-Putin news. He has the power Obama wants. What I cannot understand is why anyone who opposes Obama would go along with Putin as if he were a fine conservative. You cannot be a true Conservative and favor a dictatorship that enforces, say, Christianity. True Christians are Christians regardless of the state, like the early Christians, not because the dictator tells them to be a Christian. Anyone who could support Putin because he forces Christianity on his people would feel more comfortable with the Islamists. They're theocrats, not conservatives. And Putinistas are not conservative or libertarian. They're either dupes or authoritarian statists.

2 of the 3 websites mentioned are up, so I don’t know if this is ‘disinformation’ or Putin changed his mind.

Don’t know how to access the third site.

What I cannot understand is why anyone who opposes Obama would go along with Putin as if he were a fine conservative.

For the same reason people went along with Stalin, Hitler, and others willingly. They perceive a strong leader who will show them the path to prosperity and glory.

For that, they are willing to overlook the many sins and failings of their leader until it is too late.

It doesn't hurt that Putin is showing Obama up, but those who do not like Obama must remember Putin's KGB roots and the cold war. Failure to do so will put them with the willing in Germany in the '30s. Dupes, tools, and useful idiots.
