GOP lawmakers say the Obama administration is ignoring history in planning a defense budget that bets there won't be another protracted ground war in the near future.
The White House is expected to unveil the 2015 defense budget on Tuesday that would cut the active duty Army by more than 20 percent over the next five years.
After Iraq and Afghanistan, we are no longer sizing the military to conduct long and large stability operations, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said last Monday as he previewed the presidents 2015 defense budget.
Republicans say this move is foolish, given the effects of previous post-war drawdowns.
"You look at what happened at the end of World War II. We took the largest, strongest Army, Navy and Air Force that had ever been on the earth, and we destroyed it, totally eliminated it for the next year, said House Armed Services Committee Chairman Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) on Thursday.
So when Korea started, they pushed us almost right into the ocean. They were basically fodder trying to hold things back, he said.
Republicans also criticized the Obama administrations continued departure from a two-war strategy, where the Pentagon would be able to fight two major wars at once.
The upcoming defense budget request would allow for the U.S. military to fight only one major war in one theater, while defending the homeland and deterring aggression in another theater a strategy the Obama administration first unveiled in 2010.
It's easy to say, well, I just don't see us having another conflict again. Well, I heard that in 1980. I heard that in 1990. And I heard that in 2000. And yet we are constantly engaged, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond Odierno earlier this month.

Glad the GOP is finally railing against massive cuts to Defense. They are only 5 years too late.
Oooooo, the GOP is “bashing.” That’ll show’em!
If the Federal Government decreases the size and strength of the U.S. military, will the states concomitantly increase the size and strength of the state militias?
Um, why should our economy be growing?
We import everything from elsewhere.
Bring back AMERICAN jobs. We import far, far too much.
Wake up people. We are doing this, to ourselves.
Who controls the purse strings again?
That picture....of the traitorous three. Boner looks as always (like he’s gonna cry while he stabs us in the back), Ryan is thinking “just you wait, I’ll getcha” and Cantor is perhaps the most evil looking of the three.
If this is what we have for House “leadership” along with McConnell, McCain and Graham in the Senate, we are completely undone - there is no doubt at all about it.
Russia is invading its neighbors.
Syria, Egypt and Iraq are in chaos.
Afghanistan is spinning out control.
The list goes on and on. Tell me again why we are cutting defense?
Why do we need the army, navy, air force marines anyways? Might as well close the whole thing down and save the money.
With open borders, the enemy can just walk (wade) in; they already have.
Do we need a defense to protect the enemy within?
The GOP has played along with Obama the whole way. Particularly Boner, as your photo suggests, but most of the rest of them, too.
’After Iraq and Afghanistan, we are no longer sizing the military to conduct long and large stability operations,’ Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said last Monday as he previewed the presidents 2015 defense budget.”
Excellent! So those taxpayer dollars will now be put into beefing up our bases here at home and building a big old fence across our southern border?
*Crickets Chirping*
I hate these people.
Odierno is too young to have heard it in 1950 and 1970, but it was said then as well. The Army that deployed to the Gulf in 1990 was not as capable as the Army of two years earlier, before the Wall came down. The Army that attacked to Baghdad in 2003 was not as capable as the one that executed Schwartzkopf's left hook. The Army that will emerge from the debate will not be as capable as the one we have had for the past 10 years and has been stretched beyond its limits. We will soon have an Army as weak as the British, without the great uniforms and magnificent bands.
It's not that the nation doesn't have the money for an adequate defense, out per capita spending is headed toward pre World War II levels. The problem is that the politicians want to spend money that should go to our national security for their own political security. That means more free stuff for the voters with no concern for the future.
Yeah.

When will someone who has been elected to do something finally show some b@ll$ and DO something?
So Obama's version of The United States of America will be vulnerable to whoever has the resolve and the resources to lay waste and take control. Duh.
The GOP Establishment has as much credibility as a Chihuahua when it comes to taking on the Obama Regime.
Yap! Yap! Yap! Piss on the carpet.
Bravo Foxtrot Delta.
Obama continues his War on America, unabated.
My paychecks-and yours-pay into SS and medicare via taxes every time one is written-and if I get paid by the customer directly, I pay up at the end of the year. I will work for the rest of my life, and I will pay into those programs-it is not a choice. The “general fund” where that extorted money is kept is raided every time the pigs at the trough in DC want money.
And I’m the widow of a military vet-cuts to the budget should start at the administrative levels of every porker program, not with our troops and defenses.
“It’s the lure of easy money-it has a very strong appeal”...
If y’all don’t like it then get up off your duffs and DO something about it instead of continue to pick your noses like you’ve done for the past 5 years.
Agreed-and it starts with voting out those who howl and stamp their little feet, and replace them with those who kick ass and take names.
