ALBANY Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has raised an imposing $33 million, is riding high in the opinion polls and is expected to cruise to a second term this November.
But for a political tactician as restless as Mr. Cuomo, a nearly foregone conclusion is not good enough.
Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat, is taking the unusual step of involving himself in the selection of his challenger, telling some top Republicans that they should be leery of nominating Rob Astorino, the Westchester County executive, who is expected to announce his candidacy soon.
People with knowledge of the conversations have offered differing explanations for the governors motives. Some think he is simply trying to muddle the Republican race in hopes of gaining a stronger margin of victory when he seeks re-election in November. Others suspect that Mr. Cuomo may view the ambitious Mr. Astorino, who won re-election last year in the heavily Democratic suburbs north of New York City, as a more capable rival than he is letting on.
A third explanation, however, is full of palace intrigue: A number of people who have spoken to Mr. Cuomo say he also has expressed his desire to ensure that his eventual opponent is not far to the right on social issues. This, he has argued, could alienate moderate Republicans and other voters so much that Republican candidates for the State Senate could suffer too, potentially costing Republicans control of the chamber.

Nixon got in trouble for things his underling did in an election against McGovern he was going to win anyway. Christie's underling have similarly embarrassed him trying to pad his reelection margin. I hope the same thing happens to Cuomo.
Maybe he’s a little more concerned with the III percent (We will not comply) than he is letting on.
Of COURSE, Andy just wants to help out the GOP.
OF COURSE.
City voters (NYC, Buffalo, Albany) will deliver an easy victory for Cuomo.
Being as this is from the New York Times, not a whit of it is true. It is all misdirection and lies intended to mess up the Republicans.
Yep. They are too dumb to see the writing on the wall.
I’m not in touch with NY politics (AZ is enough to keep me busy), but isn’t there essentially no GOP in the state of NY?
More likely he’s worried that if the GOP loses the State Senate he’s left with one party rule and no one to blame.
$33million seems a little light to buy a gubernatorial seat. Maybe the rats need to squeeze more out of their business partners, along with handing out more e b t cards to their base, along with digging up some more voters at the local cemeteries.
Cuomo the fascist.
