President Denies Resignation, Calls Events A ‘Coup’
In a televised interview, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich denied reports of his impending resignation resign and called the events in the Ukrainian parliament on Feb. 22 a “coup,” HromadskeTV reported. Yanukovich called the day’s events in Ukraine’s parliament, which appointed a new prime minister, ordered the release of jailed opposition leader Yulia Timoshenko and is reportedly expected to impeach the president, amounted to a coup. He compared the situation to Nazi Germany and said he is doing his best to prevent further bloodshed. Meanwhile, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, who spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.N. Sec. Gen. Ban Ki Moon, said there has not been a coup and the new prime minister was elected legally. The president has been given 24 hours to sign the 2004 constitution into law, Sikorski said.
