He was in high school and quite brilliant. The kind of kid who didn't pick up a book all year and aced all of his honors and AP tests -- in complex subjects like Physics. He was also musically gifted. But he couldn't stop smoking weed. The school and his parents did all they could; he even took up sports so he wouldn't go home after school and smoke.
The more he smoked, the more he slacked off, the less frequently he attended class, did his work, and participated in class. They finally expelled him.
He was last seen walking on 101 in the wee hours of the morning on meth, punching and flailing at the police who pulled over to see if he was okay. ----- I typed his papers in college -- mostly for his philosophy and intellectual history classes. It's how I earned extra cash. He'd call me up -- completely wasted -- at the last minute and ask me to type his works of art, works of brilliance. He'd really nailed it this time. He was admittedly bright, but years of smoking dope left his brain all a jumble and his papers unintelligible -- a collection of disparate fragments scribbled on several sheets of paper. I'd try to edit the papers so they'd make sense but it was futile to get inside his muddled thoughts. In his mind, though, he was onto something big, his thoughts coherent and his papers exceptional. ----- My German professor wanted to help me clean up my senior thesis but had to toke up before he could sit down for a few hours and help. He needed a spliff to work on anything academic. But... he wasn't addicted. ------

Has anyone developed a serious dependency on mj brownies or cookies? If so, I think an interview of that person would make an interesting Youtube video.
Now, I will say in all honestly that, out of the many people I've known who smoke pot, I've yet to see a life physically destroyed by it. Not saying it doesn't happen, but in my near 60 years, I've yet to see it.
On the other hand, over the years I have seen dozens die or who are now disabled due the physical effects of chronic alcoholism. some people are simply going to look to stimulants to get through life.
Isn't that the truth!
Its not just the pot. Too many other factors come into play and there are anecdotes on both sides.
My brother and I are perfect examples
him - smoked alot of pot in High School. Not every day, but most weekends. He graduated in the top 10 in his class out of about 350 students. Went to a great college on a ROTC scholarship. Rose to CPT in the USMC before getting out. Now is an engineer for a defense contractor
Me - never touched pot. Never touched even a cigarette. Similar academic achievemnet, ROTC scholarship, MAJ in the Army, UH-60 pilot, married, kids, etc.
So who knows. It was easy for my brother to give up pot as it would have cost him his scholarship and commission. So he drank like a fish in college as I did (we both played Rugby for our college teams. Drank ALOT)
We did come from a loving 2-parent home with an ex-military father who was pretty strict. The discipline was pretty tight and school work emphasized to almost a tiger-mom degree. No religion at all though.
People say the pot is stronger now. Who knows. most of my brother’s pot-smoking friends did fine. I’d say the split was 80% success, 20% became relative losers. Again, probably not because of pot.
I argued at length with an attorney friend of mine (now dead) when he opined that pot should be legalized because it was lighter (than booze) to carry on back packing trips in the High Sierra (no pun intended).
I don't know how much pot he ever used, but he became an alcoholic and had to have an intervention. I just wondered why ANYONE needed to drink, or smoke, while hiking in the Sierra?
Will it make you smarter? (No) Will it make you nicer? (probably not) Will it make you richer? (Not a chance unless you are a dealer.) I’d recommend against it.
Well, whatever it does it’s going to have six to twelve months to wear off before I try it again. I’ve had about 12 left-over oxycodone tablets sitting in the vanity for years. Never took one except for pain relief — and yes, they “feel good”. Fortunately, I don’t seem very susceptible to dependency/addiction.
“Will it make you smarter? (No) Will it make you nicer? (probably not) Will it make you richer? (Not a chance unless you are a dealer.) Id recommend against it.”
There aren’t many activities I can think of that meet those criteria.
>>That is one of the aspects the Director of Student Health Services at Berkeley noticed in the 1960s! But his observations were shouted down by the users and the liberals.
I think there definitely are people that can handle pot - and it synchs with alcohol and tobacco use - the later in life you use it, the less of an addiction it becomes and the less it affects a still growing body.
The problem are all the kids that look at the time they’re not smoking pot as interruptions to the times they should be smoking pot, and there are a great deal of these amongst the youth.
It’s sad because life is so much more than just doing nothing while feeling weird.
I think a lot of the folks on this blog and we need to keep our focus on the issues that we agree on.

We’re creating a generation of stoners who will aspire to nothing but unemployment checks and food stamps, just the way the left wants it.
Chalk one up for a dwi on pot. I thought that pot wasn’t supposed to affect a person’s ability to drive a car. At least, that is what I am told.
I am trying to find the text article versus a video.
“Driver who hit 2 state troopers was high on pot.”
Here is the text.

Well, reading will make you smarter. Going to church, praying, or working at a soup kitchen will make you nicer. Working will make you richer.
All of those activities are preferable to smoking pot.
I had oxycodone prescribed for me after a knee replacement. I found that Aleve worked better with a little bit of Aspercreme rubbed on the scar when it was “pulling”. I never renewed the Oxy.
Pot's been "out of the closet" for a very long time. When I went to college (1970's) the dean of students used to invite students up to his condo for tokes... other professors did as well.
Ever been to a rock concert?
Ever been someplace like Ft Lauderdale during Spring break?
I know several people who are long into (some have retired now) very successful careers, been great parents, etc... and *gasp* routinely enjoy a little pot in their downtime when they want to relax. been doing it for decades...they've never crashed a plane, killed a patient, designed an improper jet engine, or otherwise screwed up at their work.
But. I'm sure you can find some loser who smokes pot (and takes whatever he can get his hands on) and is a mess... he gets stoned for breakfast, he can't hold a job because he's too stoned/high/drunk to figure out how to flip that burger.
People with addictive personalities should stay away from booze and pot. Normal people can safely enjoy both, and do so without any negative impact... I would dare say the impact's positive, as relaxation is useful after a stressful day/shift/project/mission.
Crick discovered the structure of DNA while high on LSD. Made all of us smarter and him richer.
I never said it was OK. I am just being accurate.
