Plane crashes, woman dies, survivor films and takes selfie

A month after a small plane crash in Hawaii, a surviving passenger shows GoPro footage and even a selfie taken during the ordeal.

Would you have done the same? Ferdinand Puentes was one of nine passengers in a 2002 Cessna Grand Caravan which suddenly suffered engine failure off Kalaupapa, Molokai in Hawaii last month. As he heard the engine fail and saw the plane heading for the water, one of his first instincts was to turn on his GoPro camera and film what might have been his own demise. As KHON-TV reports, Puentes knew the danger he was in, yet the decision to film as much as possible might perplex a few. He managed to get out of the plane alive and survived the crash. However, while he was floating on a seat cushion and wearing his life raft, he took a selfie.
Was the impulse to record just a natural reaction? After all, any bystander or news organization would have likely done the same thing. And these days everyone is using their phones to film just about everything they see. But wouldn't one's first instinct be to try to contact family and friends to say goodbye? Perhaps that did happen. The footage reflects a quite stunning lack of panic. The passengers behave in an orderly manner. There is no screaming or pushing. No one seems frantic at all. Loretta Fuddy, Hawaii's 65-year-old state director of health, died in the crash, despite managing to leave the plane. In watching Puentes talk to KHON-TV, though, it's evident that the footage brings back painful memories. Would everyone want to have such ready access to a reminder? Or would some prefer to forget? "You could have died," Puentes told KHON-TV. "There's so much variations that could have happened for the worse."

I agree w you on this point. Nobody wd agree to be a passenger on a doomed plane if they knew a sea crash was planned/inevitable. Way, way too many things can go wrong. If there was sabotage, it likely involved the engine. I read somewhere that the explosion/catastrophic engine failure had been intended to happen later, when the plane was further out to sea [but the flight was delayed]. Perhaps whoever fouled up the engine imagined all nine wd perish, and that was okay. As long as Fuddy was among the deceased, collateral damage wd be acceptable.

Here is another theory I recently read. What if Fuddy actually believed the BC she authenticated was real? Maybe she was not the brightest bulb. Maybe someone or ones she trusted assured her it was legit. She was only too happy to do her part for a POTUS she enthusiastically supported.

But over time she began to have doubts. She realized things w the LF BC were not quite right. She aired her misgivings to the wrong person. A sabotaged engine was the result.

Seems at least w’in the realm of possibility. We have assumed Fuddy knowingly participated in a crime. Given the [reputed] depths & sincerity of her Catholic faith, however, there just may be some question on that front. If so, the motive for what cd well be a heinous crime becomes evident.

If the investigator assigned to this case does a thorough probe he would certainly have to consider your hypothesis

He’s a famous person.
Celebrity, high profile deaths often slow down the release of results because more tests are performed.
But if you’d prefer to look at the lengths of times it took to release final autopsy results on Whitney Houston or Michael Jackson, those are available via google as well.

I think the guy on wing is Pilot Kowasaki as he still has dark hair compared to Yamamoto, Fuddys assistant.(Maybe someone can post pictures side by side)..Pilot was said to have given up his live vest to a woman and that may be what he was doing there...

First you say celebrity/high profile cases take longer, w Breitbart as the example. Then you cite two vastly more famous cases, Michael Jackson & Whitney Houston. Yes, both the latter are right on par w Fuddy when it comes to celebrity status. Comparing apples to apples, aren’t you?

Right, NG—right?

The ABC video tells what appears to be the full story of the water-landing:

http://abcnews.go.com/US/harrowing-video-hawaiian-plane-crash-inside-cabin/story?id=21484715

if you pause the video at the point where the man on the wing is shown, you will be able to identify him.

And at second look, that woman could be wearing a lifevest, it's hard to tell if that's her arm or a vest.

Agree that she could be wearing a life vest or some other floatation device. But if so, it would be surprising that the color of it is different from that of the life vests that the other passengers are wearing.

Seems to me that the man holding the yellow device next to her is likely Yamamoto: skin tone consistent with Japanese heritage, eyeglasses and hair consistent with photos of him.

There you go, he looks like the pilot to me, he’s blowing up the vest to give to the woman who isn’t wearing one, and if that’s the case, what you can see is her bare shoulder and arm.

Compare the man on the wing to the pilot swimming with blood on his face. Pilot and Yamamoto are both Japanese from what I can see.

The big mystery to me is who are the other two passengers and why did they take off and /or refuse treatment ?

Yes, it could be important, but then again, maybe not. It's likely the investigators know who they are, since we're dealing with small numbers here.

Another question: There are six people in the water visible on the post-crash image made by Mr. Puente. Counting the photographer-videographer, that makes seven accounted for at that time, moments after the crash. Where are the other two?
