First on CNN: Liz Cheney, whose bid to unseat Wyoming Sen. Mike Enzi sparked a round of warfare in the Republican Party and even within her own family, is dropping out of the Senate primary, sources told CNN's John King.
Cheney, the eldest daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, began telling associates of her decision over the weekend and could make an announcement about the race as early as Monday.
>> This is a setback for antiestablishment insurgents
It certainly is — at this juncture.
The Cheney family speaks inadequately to its thorn of homosexuality. I respect the family’s solidarity; however, the policy extensions have statism writ large despite the facetious charges of decadent libertarianism expressed herein.
no problem for me. it’d be a mistake to support any more political royalty anyway. it’s not a way forward.
I have read the whole thread and have been responding as I read.
You said you had no complaint against Enzi, you just want him replaced by a liberal Republican
McCain also has a high rating. I can only conclude that the rating system is rigged.
But from memory, Liz expressed an affinity to homosexual marriage law which I reject on both libertarian and conservative grounds.
We know how this act plays out: Liz gets demonized for her conservatism, and lauded for her liberalism. She becomes neutralized.
Integrity is an essential but fragmentary attribute. Liz simply could not deliver.
If you believe that Liz Cheney is not conservative enough, then we have to be content with a conservative placeholder. But if you believe that her conservatism is generally sufficient, then you should consider whether she will be more effective in retarding the socialist advance and whether she will play a greater role than Enzi has proved himself capable of playing in advancing conservatism?
If your judgment about the relative differences in conservatism between these two candidates turns on who is more anti-homosexual rather than who will be a more effective Senator in the Ted Cruz-Rand Paul mold for the conservative cause over all, I think your judgment is misplaced.
I believe the Cheney's conservatism is generally sufficient, that she would have been a more effective Senator for the conservative cause than Enzi has proven to be.
I believe that there is a salutary effect in putting the fear of God in the rest of those establishment Rino Senators by bumping a few placeholders off.
I believe that what we have been doing ain't working and we had better look for radical solutions.
I believe the keeping Enzi is to shore up the establishment under the circumstances.
If she is not conservative enough, then that the end of the story with me.
To hell with her and I would rather skip the vote than vote for another liberal RINO GOPer
Moving leftward is not a “radical solution” it is capitulation and surrender
>> Senator Enzi is part of the problem... Compare him to Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Rand Paul
Exactly.
so you’re saying it’s OK that none of the Cheneys have served? It’s OK because none of the Clintons or Obamas have served, either? When did the Clintons or Obamas become our standard for acceptable behavior in our leaders?
The good news here is conservative groups won't be needlessly wasting money and time on a Senate race where already have a conservative Senator in a safe seat. Enzi's not perfect but I can think of dozens of Senators I'd rather purge FIRST.
Please do not misquote me. If you meant to characterize my position please make it plain that you're doing so so that a reader of this thread is not misled as to what I in fact said.
But haven't you heard? His Holiness Mark Levin The Great One is INCAPABLE of mistakes!
Obviously, Orrin Hatch MUST have been a solid conservative Senator when Levin endorsed him for re-election and said so. Hatch only went rouge AFTERWARDS so he could discredit our all-wise and all-knowing constitutionalist conservative savior.
I agree. The theory that we should purge an incumbent Republican "just because" it will "send a message to the establishment" and it doesn't matter who replaces him/her, was already proven wrong when Michael Steele was replaced with the even worse Reince Priebus. I remember freepers rejoicing when Priebus got the job (doesn't matter who he is as long as Steele is GONE!!), and he turned to be a utter failure who drove our party down the path to defeat and showed contempt for conservatives.
Replacing Mike Enzi with Liz Cheney would have moved that senate seat to the LEFT. Totally unacceptable. I'm glad we don't have to worry about that now.
But if you want quotes...
63- my judgment was not based on Liz Cheney's conservative bona fidesin or whether she was more or less conservative than Enzi.
I have no complaint against Mike Enzi as measured against the rest of the Republican herd in the Senate
Anyone who votes for Mike Enzi because he is opposed to homosexuality is rearranging the deck chairs on The Ship of Fools.
OKAY, how do I put this so you will understand.
Liz Cheney is not conservative enough. Enzi is too boring for you, you want a "bomb-thrower".
The problem is she will more likely throw bombs at conservatives than leftists on some really big and vital issues that you want to see the Republican SURRENDER on.
and you expect us conservatives to go ahead and vote for that?
Oh hell NO.
Sadly true. Look at the number of conservatives who now worship the likes of Donald Trump and Jeanine Pirro. If Howard Dean started getting TV air time to every night to preach how much he hates Obama and will be running as a "Tea Party" candidate in 2014, a bunch of gullible fools would immediately start sending money to him.
I expect you now understand our position
It’s not service in the armed forces. Cheney had an opportunity to serve, during Vietnam. He took three deferments instead, and let other people serve instead.
If you call it “military service,” to be Secretary of Defense, then you’d have to say Clinton logged “military service” by being Commander in Chief. Neither is true, and you know it. Stop fooling yourself.
I was kind of down today. This story has really cheered me up. I’ll go to bed with a smile on my face.
