"US has state run transit systems in every city. Want more?"

My example was a pork producer. Transit doesn't even come close to that.

They are state owned or regulated not federal. And there have always been certain industries like utilities and mass transit that require huge infrastructure investments that necessarily limit competition and therefore are either highly regulated or state run. How many sets of rail tracks do you want in your city?

Until the late 40s there were multiple sets of streetcar tracks in the cities nationwide, and it all worked just fine. I think the question is what you consider makes Communism be Communism. State owned industries? How about GM? Solyndra? The mechanisms of ownership are different, due only to the perfectly natural differences in the organization of states, but those two are or were state owned. Hospitals? Fanny Mae? The US government is too smart and to advanced to own a pork producer, when it can control it completely through regulation as it controls entire industries without taking any risks.
