US flag is being flown at half staff at the White House (vanity)

I just saw a video shot of the White House and the flag is being flown at half staff. I can only assume this is due to Mandela's death. I am curious if it customary to fly the flag at half staff for death of foreign leaders.

I looked up the US flag code and the pResident has the authority to alter the rules of how the flag is flown. However, there is no rule in the code that stops the flag being flown at half staff for a foreigner. Personally, I would never fly the flag at half staff for a foreigner. It is an honor that needs to be diligently reserved for very few deserving Americans, otherwise it would always be at half staff.

Its a pretty fair bet that it isn’t half staff for the teacher killed in Libya today...if the prezzy even knows about it.

Depends on who dies. I read that it was also half staff when Hugo Chavez died, but business as usual when Maggie Thatcher passed.
