Nelson Mandela, anti-apartheid icon and father of modern South Africa, dies

Nelson Mandela, the revered statesman who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead South Africa out of decades of apartheid, has died, South African President Jacob Zuma announced late Thursday.

Mandela was 95.

"He is now resting. He is now at peace," Zuma said. "Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father."

"What made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human," the president said in his late-night address. "We saw in him what we seek in ourselves."

Mandela will have a state funeral. Zuma ordered all flags in the nation to be flown at half-staff from Friday through that funeral.

Mandela, a former president, battled health issues in recent months, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.

With advancing age and bouts of illness, Mandela retreated to a quiet life at his boyhood home in the nation's Eastern Cape Province, where he said he was most at peace.

Despite rare public appearances, he held a special place in the consciousness of the nation and the world.

How many milli-seconds after the news broke did Oprah blame his death on racism?

Mandela was as evil as Ian Smith. Both of them were racists but Mandela got better press. What burns me up is the hypocrisy. Black is not always good and white is not always bad. Men are men. Some good and some bad. My point is Mandela was no saint but our political class whether out of fear or ignorance will allow this man to go down in history as a hero. He was just as destructive as apartheid.

Of course. And I'm sure Obama will make another campaign speech at the funeral.

Taking bets on how many times he uses a first person pronoun in his eulogy.

Obozo just said that Mandela made South Africa better. By that logic an arsonist makes the homes he sets on fire better.

Strange that Mr. Obama had Mandela’s buddy Gaddafi whacked.

“WE came, WE saw, HE DIED!!!” - Sec. of State Hillay Clinton on the war crime torture, abuse, and murder of a POW named Momar Gaddafi.

Those SA folks certainly put a new spin on what it meant to be “tired” of somebody. What wicked bastardy, which Mandela could have called for a stop to and never did. At best cowardly, at worst complicit.

My attitude towards Mandela correlates somewhat with the present state of South Africa...which is deplorable. Of course, most of the world looks at Mandela as some kind of a hero. He “freed” the black s.a.s from the Boers. The sad truth is that most black south Africans are quite unable to live a civilized, western kind of life. To say different is to deny the facts. The best thing that could have happened is the white South Africans have their own country separate from the blacks.
