Senate Adopts New Rules on Filibusters

A bitterly divided Senate voted Thursday to ease the confirmation process for most presidential nominees, a momentous and potentially risky step that limits the ability of Republicans to block President Barack Obama's choices for executive-branch and most judicial posts.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) engineered the rules change, over Republican objections, with a complicated parliamentary maneuver that ended up placing new curbs on the use of the filibuster—a move so controversial that it is often called the "nuclear option."

"The American people believe Congress is broken. The American people believe the Senate is broken…It's time to change the Senate before this institution becomes obsolete," Mr. Reid said.

The key vote was 52-48, with all but three Democrats voting for the change and all Republicans opposed. Democratic Sens. Carl Levin of Michigan, Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Joe Manchin of West Virginia broke from their party and voted against changing the rules.

Fascism on the march

Not really. Just accelerated resolution of the overall cultural problem.

What passed is almost exactly what Frist and McConnell proposed about 9 years ago. McCain and his hand-picked "Gang of 14" shot down the GOP getting its judges in place.

Another McCain failure for the history books.

Precedent has been set for a 2015 GOP Senate and beyond.

McCain’s goal all along was to prevent a CONSERVATIVE president from getting his judicial nominees through. He’s all for getting a LIBERAL president’s nominees through.

Maybe now Republicans won’t be so content with their minority status. The Hitlerites are rolling right over them.

If there is a God, one day, we will cram this ruling down Democrats' throats and they'll have to take it because we'll make them.

Personally, I hope the retribution is so bad to Democrats that they end up digging that dead bastard "Searchlight Nevadan" up and throwing his traitorous bones to the four winds.

Just in time for a Senate takeover in 2014.

Payback’s a b*tch!

Say that in January 2017 Ted Cruz is in the Oval office and the Democrats are filibustering every judicial appointment he makes. Assuming the Republicans hold the majority in the Senate are you suggesting they would be fascists if they voted this same thing?

But he has special “discernment” ability.. maybe he has discerned that in 2014 no filibuster will be needed any more as he will no longer be in the majority..

They know this will come back to bite them in the future, but they are trading long term reward for short term success. With Obama’s ever dwindling popularity circling the drain and threatening to take his party with him, the last hope they have of enacting anything is in the next year.

The next time there is a Republican president, the Democrats will put the old rules back.

Yep. The Marxist Democrat party is pushing it to the wall. They will not release their grip on the US through democratic means and it will take a traumatic collapse of the country for a chance at a reset.

Yes, Dingy Harry knows they will lose the senate next year. Best to frontload their picks starting now.

He’s gambling (and is probably right) that the Republicans won’t have the gonads to do the same to them after next year’s elections.

Just in time as the GOP retakes the Senate in 2014. You’ll live to regret this Harry.

For over 200 hundred years, the institution worked. well, sort of..

Now this.. when despots are in power , no one is safe. not even a minority party in the Senate.

Remember that Dems, see ya in 2014 and 2016.

good luck, the house gop and Gop Senators should not pass a single Dem bill until it is reversed and drop any bipartisan thing pending, kill the lot stone dead.
