Sociopaths believe their lies. They don't believe their lies, but they don't relate to any consequences from them. As a result, they can lie without remorse or any sense of guilt. This allows them to pass lie detector tests which only detect an emotional shame response attached to lies. They know when they are lying but don't see anything wrong with that. They also have great confidence that nobody else will be able to tell that they are lying. They fully expect everybody else to believe their lies.
