Try living on food stamps this month

Can you feed yourself on $4.50 a day?

That’s the typical daily benefit for someone who gets food stamps. Millions of low-income Americans are dependent on the program, which is called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, for some if not all of their food money. SNAP benefits have just been reduced slightly, with the sunset of an economic-stimulus addition, and will likely be cut more by Congress before the year is through.

Here in Clark County, Share and the Clark County Food Bank are inviting the community to get a sense of life on that kind of budget by accepting the SNAP Challenge. Participants will commit to eating all meals from that tight SNAP budget of just $4.50 per day.

Visit clarkcountysnapchallenge.org to register for one day, three days or seven days in November. You’ll be provided with guidelines as well as suggested shopping lists and recipes. All participants are encouraged to share their experience on facebook.com/clarkcountysnapchallenge, and to connect with other participants at #CCSNAPchallenge.

At 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 19, SNAP Challenge participants will share their stories at the Vancouver Community Library, 901 C Street. That’s part of a series of activities planned for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 17-23.

Oh boo-hoo. I've seen people shopping with food stamps and their carts were both fuller and much more loaded with luxury goods, convenience items and high-grade meats than we could ever afford.

“Can you feed yourself on $4.50 a day?”

Easily. Done it. Actually for less. No beer or smokes though. Lol. And you actually have to cook.

What part of “Supplemental” don’t these idiots understand. Food stamps are not supposed to be a source of income! They are just designed to “supplement” your own money.

Next question.

I could survive nicely but it would not be good eating.

Really, once again what does the s in SNAP stand for? supplemental, people aren’t expected to and don’t live on SNAP alone so this is just another boohoo liberal idiot trying to guilt everyone.

I’ll give a damn when I stop seeing 15 year olds with 3 kids buying $20 worth of indivdual bags of chips and snacks and soda with a SNAP Card.

Or 300 pound bleach blondes in capri pants (complete with ankle tats), getting a king sized candy bar and a 44oz drink with her card and then pulling out enough cash to buy 2 packs of smokes at $6 per

It’s a lie.

The benefit is $200/mo for an adult who has to feed himself with just food stamps. Almost $7 a day.

A frugal person CANNOT spend all that money on food. He has to splurge.

The LIE is based on average payments including those given to people making quite a bit of money to spend on food.

It’s called “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. One is supposed to use it to Supplement ones food budget, not live on it. If someone wants to give me $30/week to help with my grocery bills, fine but I’ll be fine without it too.

“Can you feed yourself on $4.50 a day?”

Yes, easily. The diet would be boring, but yes, I could do it. The rest of the family, however, would have to go hungry.

There is no way anyone using SNAP is only using that and nothing else for their food purchasing! They always have other benefits and/or some other source of income (hence the term supplemental nutrition assistance program)

To elaborate:

One egg, a glass of OJ, and some cottage cheese for breakfast.

Some pasta in olive oil or butter with fresh garlic and a glass of V8 for lunch.

A chicken breast with rosemary and thyme plus some salad for dinner. Maybe a slice of bread.

Similar eating all week. Total cost: about $20, which is just under $3 per day.

To be fair, this was a few years ago.

get a sense of life on that kind of budget

I do not get the impression that many on food stamps have a budget. Looking at what they are buying it seems they have no budget at all.

I remember years ago being in school and working 2 jobs. I was in line at the Schnuck's Grocery store behind a woman wearing all brand new Tommy Hilfiger clothes and carrying an expensive purse. She paid for her entire cart of groceries using one of those benefit cards.

I paid for my items with the little bit of cash I had.

When I walked to the parking lot, she was getting into and driving away in a brand new car.

The benefits fraud business isn't new. The system is broken because people have been stealing from it for years.

Seen that more times than I can count ‘’2nd.’’ Yup, lined up at the register with carts, as you noted, carts as in can’t fit all the goodies in one cart like a working stiff like me has to do. And they’re yaking away on the cellphone too.

I’ve got a neighbor who gets food stamps and says he gets $189 per month after this $11 cut. He feeds himself and his young daughter on them for now (Mother passed away).

He tells me that he doesn’t even use up the balance on the card from month to month. He bargain shops and grew a large garden this summer so he has lots of home canned and frozen veggies.
