60 Minutes: Benghazi (CBS Transcript)
CBS News ^ | Sunday, October 27, 2013 | Lara Logan

Posted on 10/27/2013 5:45:31 PM PDT by kristinn

The following script is from "Benghazi" which aired on Oct. 27, 2013. The correspondent is Lara Logan. Max McClellan, producer.

When Chris Stevens was killed in Benghazi, Libya, on the anniversary of September 11th last year, it was only the sixth time that the United States had lost an ambassador to its enemies. The events of that night have been overshadowed by misinformation, confusion and intense partisanship. But for those who lived through it, there's nothing confusing about what happened, and they share a sense of profound frustration because they say they saw it coming.

Tonight, you will hear for the first time from a security officer who witnessed the attack. He calls himself, Morgan Jones, a pseudonym he's using for his own safety. A former British soldier, he's been helping to keep U.S. diplomats and military leaders safe for the last decade. On a night he describes as sheer hell, Morgan Jones snuck into a Benghazi hospital that was under the control of al Qaeda terrorists, desperate to find out if one of his close friends from the U.S. Special Mission was the American he'd been told was there.

Morgan Jones: I was dreading seeing who it was, you know? It didn't take long to get to the room. And I could see in through the glass. And I didn't even have to go into the room to see who it was. I knew who it was immediately.

Lara Logan: Who was it?

Morgan Jones: It was the ambassador, dead. Yeah, shocking.

Morgan Jones said he'd never felt so angry in his life. Only hours earlier, Amb. Chris Stevens had sought him out, concerned about the security at the U.S. Special Mission Compound where Morgan was in charge of the Libyan guard force.

Mention them to everybody you email this story to.

Don’t forget to mention that only the POTUS has the authority to order cross border action.

Sadly, Obama was asleep.

We don’t yet know where the president was hour by hour.

We do know that, about 10 PM Washington time, the President was in touch with Secretary Clinton. We know this from her statements.

And we also know that, within thirty minutes of this conversation, Clinton initiated the protest demonstration/anti-Islam video cover-up via Twitter.

It seems a reasonable assumption, then, that the subject of the phone conversation between the President and the Secretary of State was the formulation of a baseless lie to camouflage the actual circumstances of the attack.

Evidently, the only action the President took regarding the Benghazi attack at the time it was underway was to authorize the issuance of a cover-up based on a known falsehood!

Greg Hicks: It just is. We--, for us, for the people that go out onto the edge, to represent our country, we believe that if we get in trouble, they're coming to get us. That our back is covered. To hear that it's not, it's a terrible, terrible experience.

This, I believe, is the whole reason behind Benghazi. Kill our fighting elan. Make every operator think, do they really have my back.

This inaction castrated America in Libya and gave it to Al Qaeda. Obama is Carter-cubed. The U.S. government today acknowledges the Americans at the U.S. compound in Benghazi were not adequately protected. And says those who carried out the attack are still being hunted down.

I’m glad you posted this. I watched the show but the script adds more depth to the story. I picked up a few things I didn’t catch in the video. Thanks!

It was also reported Obama was on an hour long phone call with Netanyahu that evening. FWIW.

“Year Long CBS Investigation”

I think CBS is doing a CYA here. They are seeing Obama’s Presidency disintegrating before their eyes.

True. The call took place between roughly 6 and 7 PM Washington time. But it had been previously scheduled and was apparently irrelevant to the Benghazi Incident.

If the Democrat Party has any brains, whatsoever, they will march down the street to the White House , and demand the resignation of “Traitor” POTUS, Barack Hussein Obama.....and if Obama refuses to resign....the Democrats should move to impeach him for being a silent accomplice in the murder of four (4) USA public servants in Benghazi, Libya!!! America...shame on you for allowing this total incompetent to remain in office!!! End of story!!!

Nor was there mention of the photoshopped picture with our PINO looking like he was watching the Super Bowl along with the rest of his Cabinet. Didn’t Reggie Love out him saying they were playing cards or something when Benghazi was going down?

Enough did get said that any objective person would ask why wasn’t Hillary or Obama or Rice or that darn video mentioned. If anything close to that happened under Bush 2, there would have been a 2 hour special ready to go within a few weeks after the incident.

Initial phone call to Washington(which would have been approx 3:40pm);

http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2012/10/198791.htm

SENIOR STATE DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL:“...I neglected to mention from the top that that agent from the top of this incident, or the very beginning of this incident, has been on the phone. He had called the quick reaction security team, he had called the Libyan authorities, he had called the Embassy in Tripoli, and he had called Washington.”

Here's the CBS news account of when Washington is notified;

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57544719/timeline-how-benghazi-attack-probe-unfolded/

9:40 p.m. (3:40 p.m. ET): Gunfire and an explosion are heard. A TOC agent sees dozens of armed people over security camera flowing through a pedestrian gate at the compound's main entrance. It is not clear how the gate was opened.

The agent hits the alarm and alerts the CIA security team in the nearby annex and the Libyan 17th of February Brigade, one of several powerful militias serving as a de facto security presence in Benghazi. The embassy in Tripoli and the State Dept. command center were also alerted.

State Dept. Diplomatic Security follows events in real time on a listen-only, audio-only feed, according to testimony of Charlene Lamb, the deputy assistant director for international programs, given before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Oct 10.

Around 10 p.m. (4 p.m. ET): At the compound, several DS agents leave to get tactical gear from Building B. One stays in Building C with Ambassador Stevens and Information Officer Sean Smith. The mob sets fire to the 17th of February Brigade barracks on site.

DS agent Scott Strickland moves Stevens and Smith to the closest area "safe haven" in Building C.

The other agents, currently in Building B and the TOC come under attack.

The attackers gets into Building C, lights furniture on fire, then the building's exterior. Stevens, Smith and Agent Strickland move to the bathroom and lay on floor but decide to leave safe haven after being overcome by smoke.

Strickland goes out an emergency escape window. Stevens and Smith do not follow. Strickland returns several times but can't find them in the overwhelming smoke. He goes up to the roof and radios the other agents.

Three agents return to Building C via armored vehicle. They search and find Smith's body, but not Stevens.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is told of the incident "shortly after it began at 4 p.m.," CBS News' Margaret Brennan reported Sept. 14. Clinton spoke to the Libyan President Mohammed Magariaf to "enlist his full support."

Meanwhile, the U.S. military began moving an unarmed drone over Benghazi to provide real-time intelligence to the CIA team on the ground. It would take roughly an hour to arrive.

10:05 p.m. (4:05 p.m. ET): An alert from the State Department Operations Center is issued to a number of government and intelligence agencies, including the White House Situation Room, the office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the FBI. "US Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi Under Attack" -- "approximately 20 armed people fired shots; explosions have been heard as well. Ambassador Stevens, who is currently in Benghazi, and four COM (Chief of Mission/embassy) personnel are in the compound safe haven."

10:25 p.m. (4:25 p.m. ET): A six-member CIA team arrives from the annex with 40 to 60 members of 17th of February Brigade. The team removes Smith's body.

Around 10:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. ET): Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and his top military adviser learn of the incident.

10:54 p.m. (4:54 p.m. ET): An alert from the State Dept. Operations Center: "the firing... in Benghazi has stopped. A response team is on site attempting to locate COM personnel."

11 p.m. (5 p.m. ET): Just ahead of the weekly meeting with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Chairman of Joint Chiefs Martin Dempsey, White House National Security Advisor Tom Donilon tells President Obama of the attack and the fire at the main villa. The president and those officials discuss possible responses to the situation.

I wish you were right, but a week from now this story will be as dead as Ambassador Stevens.

Darrell Issa is a coward, the Republicans are cowards and the Democrats are backing Obama, because that is what democrats do. They stick to the party line in spite of placing our country in the hands of an incompetent buffoon, and following him like lemming to the cliff.

Good. More questions than answers. I hope a republican - just one would suffice, just one! - grows enough of a spine to ask them, and get the answers.
ahhhhh who am I kidding. *sigh*

Isn’t it the saddest thing?
