Sens. Cruz, Lee say they won't block deal

Sens. Cruz, Lee say they won't block deal By Mike Lillis - 10/16/13 12:38 PM ET

Sens. Ted Cruz and Mike Lee said Wednesday that they won't try to block the bipartisan deal to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling.

"The timing of the vote will make no difference to the outcome," Cruz (R-Texas) said. "I have no intention of delaying the vote."

Cruz and Lee (R-Utah) had spearheaded the campaign to attach ObamaCare language to any new budget bills, and had pushed their colleagues to take a hard-line stance.

But the pair emerged from a meeting of Senate Republicans Wednesday afternoon to say they would let the agreement — which contains only one provision on ObamaCare — move forward.

"Some of us want to see it first — we still don't have text," Lee said. "But provided we get the text and have time t review it and everything, I suspect we'll collapse the time."

There has been speculation that the bipartisan deal might originate in the House, thereby eliminating some procedural hurdles when the bill moved to the Senate. But with Cruz and Lee withdrawing their filibuster threats, several GOP senators said the upper chamber will likely act first on the agreement.

The deal reached by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) would fund the government through Jan. 15 and raise the debt-ceiling until February. It would require income verification for subsidies under ObamaCare, but otherwise leave the helathcare law untouched.

The weeks-long fight over ObamaCare has left the GOP sharply divided and licking its wounds, after centrist Republicans warned for weeks that the battle was futile and damaging to the party.

Several Republicans left the meeting Wednesday grumbling that the conservatives in their ranks had prolonged the impasse even as Republicans were sinking in the polls.

"We left a lot on the table because we couldn't get our act together, but this is the best Mitch could do," said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who will vote for the deal. "We need to stop the bleeding, lessen the damage to the party."

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) echoed that message.

"I hope it is another 15 years at least before we have to go through this exercise again," McCain said. "We're in a hole, we have to dig out and come up with a positive agenda."

What did you have before Cruz screwed up the plans of the liberals? You kept the sequester levels. You got the liberals in the GOP outed. You got great quotes for the GOP to use about Reid not wanting to fund cancer patients. You got people to see that the partial shutdown didn't affect them.

Most importantly, you got the pubs to actually put up a fight for the first time in ages.

And as of this moment, there still isn't a passed and signed bill to extend anything.

What did you want? A cookie?

I like Ted, he brought attention to the OBAMACARE mess. Aren’t you confused? His fight came before the debt ceiling one. He did not have much to do with the debt ceiling, default, etc. He wanted to stop obamacare.

No, Ted Cruz needs to keep fighting. He’s good at what he does, I don’t think he had any false pretenses.

What are you angry about? Maybe you need to run for the senate and house.

Will they go along again after being totally humiliated by Obama?

Dems are more united than ever. They trust Obama and Reid more than ever. They never blinked. They knew their leaders had a real plan.

Its like if the colonies all decided to go their own ways when the revolution started and England beat the crap out of them then made them sign themselves into slavery. It is a disaster.

Only if we continue to pressure them with the loss of their cushy jobs.

This fight has always been predicated on this.

Without that pressure, they are little more than Collaborators.

It's hardly a total humiliation. You do know that the individual mandate kicks in on Jan 1st and then we have another CR fight. That gives conservatives more leverage.

That doesnt seem to be working very well lately, in 2011 we at least got something out of it Sequester cuts, this time Obama kept saying ‘I give you nothing’ and that's pretty much how it worked out.

Speaking of jobs. Bohner just agreed to let Dems pass the Senate bill.
But you wont see anyone challenge him as Speaker. Not much of a lesson.

Oh come on, yesterday your words were defeatism. Now you say its fighting

To: sickoflibs
I don't know what is going to happen. Neither do you.
Difference is I don't go around spouting defeatism to try to kill off the very real momentum that conservatives have gained.

I am joking.

“there are a lot of democrats/socialists moles on here”

They seem to start coming out before primaries. Is there a watch list of the concern trolls somewhere?

RE :”The point is that electing Republicans to the both Houses and the presidency ended up with the same result: the growth of the federal government because few if any would take a stand when it came to defunding the beast.”

Maybe so but at least they go on Sunday shows and say they are against Obama-care....Dems dont do that..

:)

Cruz stood up and fought but the RINO’s would not vote with him on cloture. While the GOP fakes opposition to Obamacare Cruz stood up to really oppose it last month and only 18 other Senators joined him, most of who did it to fake out the voters back home.

He flushed out a lot of phonies in the Senate who need replacement.

If they are all going to cave including cruz then why just raise debt ceiling to february? So the pubs can go thru this charade again and the debacle will be even fresher in voters minds in the 2014 elections? What is the goal of all this if there are no dem concessions?

Default was a certainty. While it’s very true that the interest on our debt could be paid, programs and other spending would need to be reduced or cut off. When you max out your MC or Visa you stop borrowing, pay off the balances and cut spending except on essentials. Problem here is no way Barky does that. He simply stops paying the interest while continuing to spend the tax receipts on SNAP, EBTs, Medicaid etc. hence we default. Barky and the media blame the GOP, and while the public isn’t stupid and they should get it, They won’t because they will only hear Barky’s whining 24/7.

i don't buy the media lies

even if obama had not paid the interest(which an unconstitutional crime) then if , (that's 2 big ifs so far) then If the economy actually was hurt then it would be obama how got the blame.

what's stopping obama from paying the interest on the debt now then? they needed to pass all this bs for it to pay the interest? i call bs

as if the economy is doing so good now or something

there was no crisis . the media lied

We never were going to get rid of Obamacare and we played a weak hand well.

Obama and the Dems are desperate, so are the RINOs. Did you hear McCain’s moan?
